I have been using cable access for 2 years now. The following started about 2 months ago. I have an HP533 64 mg RAM,using W98SE with IE + OE 5.5.
When I first boot up, I connect to the net as well as retreive my email within 2 to 3 seconds. After about an hour of inactivity it takes 1 to 2 minutes to connect to a site or get my email.
Things I have done to try and correct this:
1) Scan disc
2) Defrag
3) Shut down power management
4) Shut down all running programs except explorer and systray
5) Check for conflicts

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
Larry H.

Weclome to the SpeedGuide forum, Larry. Have you tried pinging your gateway or any website while in this 'sleep mode'?

</font>To find your gateway:
Start | Run | type: winipcfg

Using the ping command:
open a command prompt
type: ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -n y &lt;enter&gt;
where x = your gateway, or IP address/web address and y = the no. of requests you wish to send

While your at it, run some tracerts to web sites too:
open a command prompt
type: tracert xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
where x = the IP or web address of the site you want to run a tracert on

I have roadrunner and it does this too me too. If i leave the computer sitting for like 30 minutes and come back to it and try to get on the net i have to do this: (1.try to open a website but it doesnt connect, close the window (2. repeat step 1 until the page loads half way (about 4 tries) then close it (3. open the website again and its loads up and its out of "sleep mode".
I also have to do that when i print a document.....
