My Opinion/Status: Ok I live in Elk Grove (Sacramento basicly) California. I have had PacBell DSL, and that was terrible. I signed up for the @Home self install kit. I though:No big deal, i setup networks everyday (my job). I set it up and called to actvivate... and some canadian girl says " i can find HALF your account info.. so she fixes it (2 HOURS). "Ok Sir, your modem should come on in the next 3 hours" . I said ok, and went to bed. I tried the next day (power cycling, and no luck. It wouldnt sync.
So i called in, i get this guy named Richard. I explain it all , and he says, "Well, you have to subscribe to cable TV service sir" , Me: "Well, ive been told the contrary, and your manual here agrees with me", him:"lemme ask my manager", i wait, he comes back 20 minutes later and says his manager confirms that i have to have cable tv service. I hang up.
i call back, it takes 30 minutes to get to them, i explain and they said, "Ill just send you to a Tier 2 tech", i felt relieved... for a moment. Now , i am not exagerating... I waited for 2 hours+ , and finaly i hear a click... then a recording saying "Thank you for calling Excite@home" (I subscribe to Comcast@home), then a gy comes on the line "ATT&T@Home how may I help you?" i got him to call Comcast and get me a LIVE person. Now , I talk to him a few, and he decides to RE-PUSH the modem, and that WILL FIX IT, and hell call me in 45 minutes. he didnt call for 3 hours, so i called again.
Anoyther hour on hold. They said they HAVE to send a truck out, and it would take 6 days. i thought to myself" BULL@#!!". But i said "ok"
I found a guy on IRC that was working at @home... i thought for sure he could help me , and he did. After chatting for 2 hours, we decided it was that the cable wasnt connected at the pole. WOW! a solution. SO i called them again, they said sorry, we cant make the appointment any sooner, even if it will only take us 2 minutes to connect the cabel. HUNG UP. I went rite up the telephone pole up front, and saw that there was only one person connected with cable, and the rest had locks. So i took the splitter they sent me in the mail , went ip there again, and hooked it up. Voila!!! IT SYNCED!!!!
And that was my horror story at first.
Now onto my questions:
1.)Will the splitter i put up there slow down my cable downloads? I get 170K/s from www.happypuppy.com (http://www.happypuppy.com) , and 300K/s from www.mirc.com (http://www.mirc.com) , and 80-120K/s off of normal websites.
2.)My ping is almost 900ms, when they resolve that problem will my speed increase?
I am using a GI SURFboard, and a Kingston Net card.
Tanks for the help.
Brian
