Let me explain this to you..

About 2 days ago I've noticed the VERY fast reduction in the speed my ISP is giving me. I use Charter Communications 3MBPS package. I'm used to getting 300kbps on almost every download, every website. Lately it's gone as low as 7kbps like I'm using dial up. I've done the dslreports test which concluded I have 2400 download and 170 upload like usual. I've done various netstat tests showing my hops to Charter were really good, 30ms-40ms, 15ms-20ms..

Nothing really bad. I have a Toshiba PCX2200 Cable Modem and a D-link 624revC Wireless Router. The router gives everyone else in the house wireless internet, and for me I have hardwired internet which goes through the router. I unplugged the router and just plugged it in directly into the PC and resulted in the same speeds.

This is an all of a sudden occurance, I've had great speeds for years. I need to know what options do I have. Should I buy another cable modem? I've done nothing to this modem, not dropped, not spilled anything on it. I've reset both modems to factory defaults last night and nothing has changed.

Please, someone help me!

What O/S are you using?

Go to control panel > system > hardware tab > device manager under device manager section > expand "network adapters" then double click on your's for properties > advanced tab > go to media type or the like, and make sure that the corresponding value is set to autosense, autodetect, or the like; afterwards, restart both the router and cable modem, respectively.

What are the speeds like for the people in your house using the same connection?

Should you buy another cable modem? What if the cable modem isn't the problem? Certainly if you have another cable modem, it doesn't hurt to try it. As far as routers go, wireless routers are just not the way to go, in my opinion of course; they just present too many problems but I guess you don't really have a choice in your situation :D

Also, you may get better results posting this thread on the routers/internet sharing forum under broadband forums.

Both modems?

What sites are you trying to DL from? getting 2400 down it doesnt seem that the problem is on your end.

Well, for starters. I am running Windows XP Professional. Sorry about posting in the wrong area, but I am a first timer here and did not know where to post. I will think before I post though. Yes, both modems. I'm downloading from Fileplanet and Cnet which are one of the top areas to download, and on Fileplanet or Filefront I have FastPass and it doesn't seem to work.

Speeds in the household are almost the same. My brother(the room over) gets about 80kbps, but I get less than that. The reason I have a wireless router is because buying 2-3 seperate cable lines is too expensive when every other computer is far from my room. Freddy, I tried what you said to do but it was already on Auto-sense. Speed/Duplex.
