While paying my bill I noticed that Hampton Roads is now @ 15mb!!! and at
the same price. Outstanding!!!

So I began testing speeds on the family computers 1 Main PC (Wired) and 3
Laptops (wireless w/ Linksys WRT54GS) Modem is SB4100
Only 1 PC can achieve near full speed (12.5 to 13.0Mb) that's my wifes
laptop and it's the oldest. The other PC's can only reach 5 - 8Mb. All the
PC's achieve near rated upload speeds 1.5 to 1.8Mb

So I first bypassed the router - no change.
un-installed anti-virus, spam stuff - no change
Remove the RJ-45 from the main pc and tried the connection via USB.
Connection was increased on the main PC from 5Mb to near 6Mb.
Any other suggestions? Thanks.

I'm curious on what provider you have offering that speed first?

Also speeds upward of 10megs + require certain modems to get that so I would say its modem related. check with your provider for a list of modems they say is needed to get those speeds.

Cox.net in Hampton Roads, VA Premier Service is 15Mb Down/2Mb Up.

At first I thought maybe the Modem. My SB 4100 is no longer on their list of support modems. But since one of the Laptops are able to reach speeds of 12-13Mb I have put that idea aside. But......

Thanks for the response.

You need to replace your modem even if it's working ok, that modem is DOCSIS 1.1 and needs to be DOCSIS 2.0. I live right near you and have the same package from Cox and get the maximum bandwidth almost all of the time. You also need to optimize your connection, the default settings in XP won't really allow you to take advantage of our caps.

How much are you paying for that internet service. :)

I'd be willing to bet he's paying about 60$ since Adelphia is rolling out there Extreme Tier for 60$ and that boosts 16m down and 2m up
