I have the @home service and i am about to put a second computer on the account so that i can access the service from both...Alot of people waitin in my house to get on the internet.....The computer that has the cable modem hooked up to it now is a Desktop and i wish to hook a laptop up to the second connection... I just went to Amazon.com and bought a Linksys PCMPC100 EtherFast 10/100 card for the laptop and a Netgear DS-104 4 Port 10/100Mbps Dual Speed Hub for the Desk top....Will this do the trick or did i make a mistake buying these parts... I know i still need the Cat 5 cable and i will need about 60 feet of that....Because i need to go from the desktop which is in a upstairs bedroom to the cellar which is where the laptop is .....Please reply to phillyman2001@home.com or reeves001@pit.edu with your help

hi phillyman, welcome to SG. i have a similar setup, only w/o a laptop. but it should pretty much be the same. just install the NICs, get the CAT 5 cable running, and then decide on which type of sharing software you are going to use. i use ICS myself, but there are plenty of other options. click here (http://www.practicallynetworked.com) for a LOT of information on networking more than 1 computer. it is how i set mine up.

Welcome to Speed Guide phillyman2001...
You will need to use a router in conjunction w/the hub, or convert one of your PCs into a "server". If you choose to buy a router, you can save some money by purchasing one w/o a built-in switch/hub, since you just bought a hub. If you choose to go the server route, you will need to add another NIC to your server. This will be the LAN NIC and will go directly to the hub. It will need an IP of 192.168.0.1 and a subnet of 255.255.255.0. Also, you will need to run ICS -- which is built-in to 98se, ME, and 2k -- or proxy software, such as Sygate.

Is there any way i can do it with only what i just bought...i kind of hate to have to buy more parts....i was told that the @home service will give me another IP adress...i just want to share files and Internet connections between these computers....plus these computers are already slow as it is ...i dont want either one to depend heavely on the other....233mhz and 266mhz
Thanks Rob
ps were those the correct parts ?
