Hi,

I am running Cerberus FTP Server 2.32, with a Linksys BEFSR41
and Windows XP Pro SP2, on an AMD Athlon 1.3GHz, w/640MB RAM
and a cable modem.

I have the ports forwarded properly and users can connect fine.
I use port 5100 (tried it at 28 also) and 5000-5010 for passive.
Is it possible I need to assign more passive ports, even if only
one user is on when this problem is experienced? And what is
the best port for FTP? Is there something in the router that
slows it down, if 21 isn't used? Cerberus detects the WAN IP fine.

The problem is, I am getting very slow speeds. Only 45Kbps max.
And if more than one user is on, that 45K gets divided up between
them. So I get a total of 45KBps, for all users combined. If one user
is on, then that user gets the whole 45KBps.

I have tried turning Optimized File Sending on and off, with the
same results both ways.

I had the same problem with Serv-U, so I'm thinking it's something
besides the server software itself.

I also just formatted my drive and reinstalled Windows and have
made sure to scan and keep the system clean. I just did this
night before last.

Does anyone have any idea what I can try, to increase speed?
I don't have any other transfers going on at the same time.

If I do use a P2P program though, the FTP Server drops to
between 10 and 15 KBps. There is no limit for transfer speeds
on this server package, as far as options to limit them.

I have tested my throughput on the following web site and
I got 4.4 megabits per second.

I have Windows firewall completely disabled. There is no
firewall software running on my PC.

Thanks!

That site only tests your download speed. What is your rated upload? 45KBs is probably a 384k line. Cable modems generally have very high download and very low upoad speeds.

If you do have a 384k line you can't go any faster serving files (though people could probably upload files real fast.

That was it. Confirmed with my ISP. And the fasted they offer would only get me maybe another 20KBps. Sad! Can't get DSL where I am, but that would probably be worse anyway. I would have checked with my ISP first, befpre posting, but it didn't even occur to me that someone could be offering less than 384KBps. This is ridiculous!

Thanks for your help!

Not sure what type (size) of files you are hosting and how many different people will be using the service, but you could go with a budget hosting solution http://powweb.com has packages at 7.77/month with 5GB storage and virtually unlimitted throughput. There are similar packages out there from other hosts. FTP service (several accounts) is included so you don't need to know web development or use the webservices at all.
