Okay, I'll be getting Adelphia's Power Link service installed Friday morning. I'm hoping that I'll be able to get speeds far faster than my 28.8 that I use at home. However, since I'm new to cable modems and broadband, I have some questions now, and I'm sure I'll have another few on Friday. Great, another UBB board where I have to come on as the ignorant newbie. I'm not THAT ignorant though. I just need a little help starting off.

1) Any of the Adelphia users. How fast can you download a file on average? Either off a T1 on Napster or something from 3dfiles.com. I've heard that some Adelphia users get like 200kb/sec or more, but local friends that already have Adelphia say they usually get 40kb/sec. What should I expect on Friday?

2) I'm assuming kb/sec is KiloBytes per second, not KiloBits. So if I'm wrong, just keep that in mind.

3) Should I get some kind of a firewall program? If so, which one(s)?

4) Q3 or UT?

5) I am somewhat clueless when it comes to cable modems, so is there anything I should know?

Ah, I can't really think of any more questions at this time, but I'm sure I'll be loaded with them in 5 days. Thanks for all your help.

Couple more things

Make sure to check your speeds and all before tweaking, then save your registry and tweak away for Best performance...

Quake3 IMO is better then UT http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/biggrin.gif Love that game to death, you can play around with Max FPS if your saturating the line and lagging everyone out with your fast speeds, hehehe

Get a Direct Drop done for your cable install if they will do that....

The less splitters the better, make sure they get the signal right at the tap and at your modem...

And finally with Cable your speeds can vary wildly, it's all area/system dependendt, basically Trial and Error...

On cable your speeds will vary get familier with the info. here at speed guide before you just try anything there is allot of good information here.
Your speeds can be anywhere from 15KB/sec on up to 200KB/sec without doing any of the patchs here and there can be a noticable increase once you apply them properly.

Yes you are right in the assumtion on KB/sec
samples
200KB/Sec = Kilobites
2000Kb/Sec = kilo-bits

Cable modems I won't get into there are so many of them that this would get very long just keep in mind that you really don't want a USB modem if at all possible they are known to give problems

Firewalls well I use an assortment but the main one esp. works well and won't make you nuts is Zone Alarm http://www.zonealarm.com
and yes you do need one.
On cable your sharing the same connection and you don't want your neigbor in your machine.
Hoped some of this helps.
