Just got my cable modem hooked-up Saturday, did a couple of line speed checks ranging from 167kbps to 1000kbps last night(that's flying). With all that speed I still seem
to be bogging down on the internet no better than my dialup. Is there some basic (minor) tweeks I can do to get some more pep into the ole pc(p166-mmx/64mb ram)?

I have also installed zonealarm for some protection, which raises a question in my
mind. Zonealarm caught quite a few "attempts" trying get in, and since it was in stealth mode it registered the ping with no response to the sender, which is good. Now, is there anything out there I can download to find out the whos, wheres, and whys of these outside pings?? This would be very helpful. Thanks.

The high-speed tweaks at this site should take care of any speed problems as long as you have a decent machine.Neoworx has a product called neotrace that will tell who the infiltrator is.Here is the link.

Are the speed tweaks safe? I'm running win95 on my p166mmx and have done a few things to the registry, but I get real queesy feeling in my tummy when I have to update the reg without backup procedures.

Always backup the reg first, but I have two machines that I have reformatted and reloaded the OS on(just practice!)and have not had a prob with the tweaks yet

thanks TRCG, appreciate the info. I'm gonna try to apply some of those patches. My wife will nag on if I screw up with these tweaks and deny her access, but that's life. :-)

I haven't heard of any problems with the tweaks yet, but make a registry backup to be on the safe side http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif

Are you sure these are not just responses to your own connection requests? If you use ICQ, the AOL ICQ servers will respond back. Like I said in my post about ZA....
