sorry but that makes no sense to me at all
For starters if you're not using AOL you can stop all those processess that have AOL in the name.
Startup control panel http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml is a great program and gives you a nice interface that allows you to remove any of those services from your startup folders.
Actually other than the AOL stuff there's not much "fluff" going on there.

use a reg cleaner to go in and clean out startup programs you don't want starting on boot up and this will also let you clean out left over files/reg entries and such from old deleted programs.
google.com = search for "regcleaner"
program works really good and shows everything by its full name usually.
click Start Button > Run > type msconfig > click it's Start Up Tab > uncheck the startup pgms that you do not want.
"qttask.exe" is the only one unrelated to Windows, AOL or McAfee that I can see. Although TonyT's suggestion will work, the better way to do it is to launch your Quicktime Player and hunt around the "options" or "preferences" to uncheck the thing that says something like "Launch <whatever> when Windows starts." That's what I would do and it will get rid of "qttask.exe."
Do the same for MSN Messenger if you don't use that program either. Launch the program and uncheck the "Launch MSN Messenger when Windows starts."
I know you didn't ask for my opinion on this but I'll throw it out there anyway: If you can, get rid of AOL and McAfee. Use some other Internet Service Provider and some other antivirus program. AOL gets deeply rooted in your computer, is buggy and a resource hog. People get hooked on AOL because it "holds their hands" and is easy and so people are afraid to try something that's more "streamlined" for their Internet access. If you are on dial-up, get a service provider that simply connects you to the Internet, not one that REQUIRES you to install their hoggish software in order to connect. Ask any experienced, knowledgable IT professional and they'll tell you the same. Hell, look at all the processes that AOL has running on your system now!
And McAfee is not one of the better antivirus programs. If you want a good one that you can use for a year at no cost, let me know. ;)

Unfortunately, qttask.exe CANNOT be permantly removed from the registry by deleting the value or by using msconfig or by configuring quicktime.
If removed from startup, the next time you run quicktime, it will recreate the registry value to autoload qttask.exe.
Since qttask.exe is a non-essential process, and since it does not affect any quictime functionality, it can be permantly removed from startup by doing this:
1. locate the quicktime folder in c;/program files
2. rename qttask.exe to qttask.exe.old
the registry value will still exist BUT qttask.exe will never load at startup and quicktime will still work as it used to and you will get NO errors.

Against my better judgement, I just downloaded and installed QuickTime on one of my comptuers. Upon initial setup, there were two registry keys added to the RUN section of HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version. One was the iTunes service and the other was qttask.exe.
I immediately configured QuickTime to NOT load Quick Time task on Windows load.
Despite the command in the registry to run with Windows at boot time, qttask.exe never loaded and was not present when using Task Manager. I then used the Quick Time player, closed it, then rebooted. Again, the command was there in the registry location noted above, but it never loaded.
I then deleted the registry key and it never reappeared after several uses of QuickTime and several reboots. So qttask.exe can indeed be effectively kept from loading through the Preferences in QuickTime player.
Now the iTunes service and iPod services are another thing, since they're now wrapped-up in QuickTime. There are no settings, as far as I could find, in the iTunes Preferences about not loading the iTunes service with Windows. The above registry location did have a command to load iTunes at Windows boot time, so I deleted that and it never reappeared, even after using iTunes. I suspect the iPod service is a dependency with iTunes, because it never reappeared either.
So to sum up, while that may have been true for old versions, the new version of Quicktime does indeed honor the user's request to not load with Windows, if that's the way the user set it up in the Preferences section. But he may be using an older version (since I didn't see the iTunes service running, he probably is), and in that case TonyT may be correct with his instructions to rename the executable.
It's no wonder the average computer user has problems, look at what we have to go through in order to control some of these programs!
if my memory serves me well, I stopped iTunes Service startup on my kid's system via admin tools/services. If set to manual the service can still be used but won't load at boot.
