View Full Version : Good wireless router?
What would you guys recommend from Futureshop and Londondrugs (futureshop.ca, londondrugs.com)? Looking for something that's reliable and less than $100 Canadian. My friend told me that Linksys is not reliable. Is that true?
Thanx. :)

I used to not like Linksys, but the new SRX router works flawlessly and has a great range. That is the router I would recommend but it's about $150, for under $100 I would definitely get a D-Link DI624.
:)
The SRX is way out of my price range. :(
Which one of these would you recommend?

The wireless card I have is 802.11g (108Mbps)
If you can use 2WIRE at ca.... I would use it. I used Mircosoft broadband router drop out soooo often , Linksys router not drop out but with any USB wireless adapter...it is suck, Netgear most time like Linksys....
So far I use 2wire router with Microsoft USB adapter..it is wonderful. :thumb:

I would buy either the Netgear WGT624 or the D-Link DI-524, I have always had good luck with both of them.
:)
Is there a major speed between 54Mbps and 108?

Well, double... but that's the speed of data transfer over your LAN, not the speed of your internet connection, 54 is more than enough.

Ahh I see. So if I'm not giong to transfer data over my LAN it shouldn't really matter then.
Looks like D-Link DI-524 will do then. I'm guessing this one has pretty good range and doesn't drop often? :)

Good choice, just make sure you update your firmware and use WPA encryption and you're good to go.

Linksys SRX
Belkin Pre-N
IMO if you're going out to purchase wireless gear these days, Pre-N/MIMO is the way to go. Not so much for the throughput, but because of the fanstastic range, and ability to get that signal down hallways and other rooms. It really is that good.
And you don't need Pre-N NICs on your computer, any legacy G or B wireless NIC will work fine with them, and still gain benefit from the range increase.
I had the Netgear 624 and it (even with consistant firmware upgrades, different powerpack with consistant voltage, etc) constantly resets and occasionally loses all saved config's for no reason. I would stay very far away from it. I can say nothing but good about the DI-524 though.
Going to get the router either today or tomorrow so just looking around for deals...
Right now my pick is DI-524...but what about these? My main concern is wireless signal, not really concerned with network speed. And of course security features are important too.
DI-524 $69.95 @ Londondrugs & Staples
Netgear WGR614CN $79.95 CAN @ Staples
D-Link 624 $99.95 @ Staples

Not too sure the model # for the 2 from Futureshop. :(
Should I stick with DI-524 (assuming there's still some left at the stores)? If not, which one should I get? Thanx!
You cant go wrong with the 524's range, seriously. I can go out to the end of my backyard and still have plenty of signal left (its quite far) and everywhere in my entire house, as well as a couple homes down either way and stay connected. I get Excellent or Very Good signal (54mbps connection) anywhere within my entire house. This is all with the stock rubber duck antenna that came with it, im sure with an external directional antenna it would go way further im just too lazy since everywhere I want it, it works :)
The 624 is identical to the netgear 624 and thats the one I had a terrible time with (rebooting constantly, settings being lost randomly, etc). Not to say others dont have it and it works perfect, but just lettin you know my experience.
I got the 524. It's $69.99 at Londondrugs, $89.99 (plus $20 mail-in rebate) at Futureshop. I went to Futureshop, talked to the salesperson and got it for $67.99. He didn't give me the 110% deal...what a jerk.
Going to try and use the $20 mail-in rebate and see what happens. :D
Oh question on how I'm going to set up this with my cable internet.
I know you need to register a MAC address with the cable company and the router would use this MAC address. Since I'm going to set up the router first by LAN can I register by ethernet MAC address for the router & internet and then use wireless later?
If the router has the MAC address your cable co. allows spoofed, you can access the internet with wireless as well as wired, any computer hooked to it will be able to. We havent done the MAC thing for awhile in our system.

If you're looking to save money, Tiger direct offers a refurbished unit at $26.99 or new at $42.99
I would go for the range of a preN like Belkin for $189
