Well I just installed my DSL software and modem yesterday and apparently during the first 10 days I am supposed to keep my modem running as they are optimizing my connection speed and such. First, does this mean that I have to keep my modem connected to my computer (I have an Xbox and would like to be able to disconnect the ethernet cable from my computer and use it to play on Xbox Live)? Second, does anyone know of cases where speed has drammatically increased after this 10-day period? My DSL is only downloading at around 30 kbs...

Thanks :)

By the way I have SBC Yahoo DSL and a Speedstream 5100 modem. I can't seem to find the answer to this problem in their customer service either.

Yes you want to keep your modem on and running. Yes I've seen slight performance gains after the period, not anything large though.

I always leave the modem running 24/7 anyways, safe to do when you're computer is behind a router (NAT firewall), or if the modem they sent you also has router features built in, like a built in NAT firewall. If you run ipconfig on your computer, and you have a 192.168.xxx.xxx address, then your modem is also a router. If you pull a public IP address, something starting perhaps with a 6x.xxx.xxx.xxx...then they shipped you a straight modem/bridge.

I was told about ththe ten day thing just 5 days ago when i complained about my dl speed (30kb/s). I've just done a speed test to discover its now 60-70kb/s, a reasonable hike if you ask me
