I have been using Ameritech DSL for the last few months. I never had connection problems, but I had to tweak MTU/RWIN to get reasonable download speed. I think I have tried all the tweaks I can think of. I have tested bandwidth with DSLReports/Tools.. . MSN, CNet and 2Wire.com. I don't see anything beyond 450Kbps. I am using Download Accelerator and when I download I hit 1MB once in a while. Is this the 'normal' connection for 768/128 DSL? I know the max download they gurantee is 768Kbps that does not mean I am going to get 768 all the time. I went to a @Home cable demo and I ran some of the same bandwidth test and they were consistantly above 1.5meg. Since there are not too many @home connections in tghat area I expected it to be fast.Is there a downloadable tool that will always display bandwidth.
Thanks and appreciate comments or suggestions.

The starting point for testing is uploading/downloading from a site at your ISP to eliminate all the variables of the Internet. MSN is absolutely the worst, Microsoft having announced that the test is not right.

At http://www.ins.com/software/index.asp you can download net medic which will show the actual rate of your connection. Looks like you are getting pretty goood results as is.

Good luck.

The fastest download you should get with a 768 kbps connection is about 90 Kbps (768/8).

In my experience patches don't speed things up a great deal because DSL caps you at your connection speed.

The most benefit I've seen using tweaks is with cable modems.

W/DSL, the highest you can get is about 85% of your connection rate due to transmission overhead. So, the max you will see is ~80KBps. If your having trouble reaching your max, then the SG reg patches (http://www.speedguide.net/Cable_modems/cable_patches.shtml) may help you out.

The way my ISP got around this was they gave me a slightly higher connection than 512.

I was sold a 512 kbps connection but was connected at about 600 kbps so I had about 512 kbps available to me.

i have a 648kps DSL service. I normally get around 35-50KB/s downloads speed.

Not that lucky. I was at their promo and my area was out. I will stick with DSL for a while.
