Before I go back to university next year, id like to buy myself a good digital camera to aid me in my media work. Ive been looking around, but dont really know a great deal about digicams.
I dont mind whether the camera is SLR or not, but I do have a tight budget.
Are there any good digital cameras that offer decent resolution and pictures at a reasonable price? Or am I looking at big bucks = good performance / pictures?

Word of advice, don't skimp and go budget or cheap. Save your pounds and buy what you really want. :)

Here is what I recommend doing:
1) Go to www.pricegrabber.com and click on "top digital cameras" on the right
2) Filter the results by the MOST you're willing to spend (keep in mind buying more batteries, filters, memory sticks, camera bag, tripod, etc)
3) Start reading up on the top picks and what catches your eye on the popular camera review sites like the following:
www.steves-digicams.com (as cybo posted)
www.dpreview.com
www.dcresource.com
www.dcviews.com
www.megapixel.net
www.imaging-resource.com
www.digitalcamera-hq.com
The list goes on...

Canon A series are great. They give you full manual control.
A friend of mine recently got a Fuji (not sure the model #) but it has full manual control as well. :)
