View Full Version : Do I need anti-virus software?

Should a friend who is running Windows XP Professional behind a router (not on a LAN -- no other computers connected at this time) install an anti-virus software program? Necessary anyway even if behind a router (DSL PPPOE connection)? (She does NOT have anti-virus software installed nor spyware programs either -- want to give her some useful advice before things get bad.) Thank you one and all.

By ALL means install an antivirus program, a router does not protect you from viruses or spyware, all it does is block inbound attacks on your LAN.
I would recommend using Kaspersky Personal 5 Antivirus, Ad-Aware SE 1.06, SpyBot S&D 1.4 and SpywareBlaster 3.4.

Absolutely, the router provides basic firewall protection by default from all "outside==>in" bad stuff.
But one still needs to have windows updates done, as well as virus/malware protection. Just surfing the 'net, or instant messaging, or checking e-mail, or transferring files, etc...the end user can still get infected by threats through those means...which a firewall has nothing to do with when it's end user driven.
