..get cable ??

I am an idiot so bear with me ... ping is connection related ..you can use the tweaks/tips listed here on the site to improve system performance but I don't believe there is anything you can do to lower ping other than getting a faster connection ..or finding a server that is closer to you geographically ...just sort the server list by ping

There really isn't much you can do to lower your ping for say. Ping or Latency is the time it takes from point A (You) to point B. (the Server) There can be many factors that go in to this as your node could be overloaded or a slow hop on the way to point B Or the server being just to far out of reach. (Over seas etc)

But there are a few things that could be pulling on your Internet connection Like spyware Filesharing apps laggin you down.
Try runingAdaware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html) If that still don't clear up your problems and you have tryed multiple servers you may wanna contact your ISP it could be on there end.

DSL should show better pings times then cable Depending on the quality ISP of course. But DSL is a direct line from your ISP And cable is shared between many customers.

Megabytes have very little to do with ping times. Looks at it like this you have the fastest car on the road yet the road is congested with traffic are u gonna be able to use that speed? :nope:

Wasnt trying to step on your toes Izzo ;)

Most of it depends on your ISP, some of it depends on the 1) Health of your computer, and 2) Quality of your components from your computer...out to the broadband connection.

Quality IPS...all ISPs are NOT created equal. In general, DSL will usually perform better for online gaming, less latency.."in general". However, most people select the local phone company for their DSL. Local phone company wasn't the best back in the dial up days, what makes people think they'll be the best with DSL? I don't know. Anyways, there are usually higher quality ISPs out there which perform better. Speakeasy.Net is a great one, they even have a special "ultra low latency gamers package" you can sign up with. I use Bizonline/Cleartel. DSL.NET is also a pretty good one, although I think they only sell business accounts now. Yes these better quality ISPs will cost more money than your local phone company, but hey, you get what you pay for.

As for your computer, some routers perform better than others. Gamers should have a PCI based network card, not a USB network card. Software firewalls also impede performance, I prefer a nice NAT firewall based in my router...hardware driven, no CPU load.

The health of your computer, follow this guide...

Are others connected to your network? How is the health of their machines?

Shoot man ....no worries .. when I had DSL ..I was pinging like 100 or so on my MOHAA server .. switched to cable .. I am at 50 ..same server/same location..That was a a while back and I was at the furthest point possible from the phone co....like i said i'm still trying to pick all this up myself ... thanks for the info. :thumb:

Ping means nothing if there is no lag.

Play COD on another server.... I'm guessing your playing on one certain server and thus getting a high ping. This happens if your pinging another server say across the country. Do a "ping" test to that IP# of the server and a few others see how many "points" or "hops" your going through and which might be slowing you down....as stated above not much else you can do cept try not to go through slow hops or slow computers/servers to get to that certain gaming server.

If there are other computers sharing your internet connection, their health can affect yours. What if their computers are infested with worms, downloader trojans, viruses sending out SMTP spam, all sorts of activity from them. Or they have some peer to peer program running in the background sharing files, so your upload is hammered with people leaching downloads from the computers.
