Hi
I won't say how much I hate NIS or the none existent support but for reasons too boring I have to resolve this issue and would appreciate any pointers...

Norton Internet Security 2005, Win98
PC connects to Gateway no probs since install (had zonealarm free before)
but....

...mapped network drives fail to connect at start-up NOW but will connect when double clicked in explorer once windows is fully loaded.

The network connections are now stupidly slow but the DSL connection is fine.

I have enabled inbound/outbound filesharing in the firewall settings...can someone tell me what else I need to do (no doubt it's obvious but my network knowledge begins to fail about here!). Clearly it's a firewall configuration problem as it was fine under zonealarm and goes away if I disable norton firewall.

Any help......cheers.

I'm not fond of software firewalls either...but the few times I've worked on networks with Internet Security (although not 2005)...you could setup a "Trusted Zone"....on all the workstations...specifying an IP range such as 192.168.1.XXX as being allowed.

Thanks YeOldeStonecat

I have already done this (works fine on another machine on the same network but that's on WinME) however the advanced/general also requires tinkering with to allow file sharing...(why Norton?) and the documentation only goes this far. The other options for inbound and outbound imcp etc. are not documented and mean little to me.

(I assume it's in this area as the reconnect for network drives happens at the outset utilising these "deep" windows areas (my dos,3.11WFWG knowledge was good once!)

Like I said the connections work to a point.

I'm willing to learn but don't know where to look.

Anyone?.....Thanks.

OK so this issue is specific to just one computer, there are others which have IS 2005 that work OK?

Are you using just TCP/IP? Or also NetBEUI? All of them just Win9X? Or any 2K/XP ones too?

TCP/IP only
All ME/98SE
Works fine on ME machine with NIS2005

Hmmmm...dunno. Honestly I'm not fond of 3rd party software firewalls, the newer versions out there from McAfee and Symantec are rather (both firewall and antivirus)....resource hungry...tend to bog computers down badly, especially older hardware. I'm wondering if your machine is somewhat overwhelmed...and struggling to keep its head above water.

Might try uninstalling TCP/IP on your computer...then reinstalling it. Also, just for testing purposed...might look at other antivirus products, and software firewalls if you really want one, that are both more effective, and lighter on resource consumption.

Kerios firewall, you already tried Zone Alarm, also Sygate. And a lighter antivirus, like AVG, or Esets NOD32 (lightest, fastest, and top effectiveness...my personal favorite)
