You ordered a second IP form your provider? If so, you should have gotten a second computer name, which should be used w/ your laptop. Also, the workgroup should be entered in as '@home'.

From the laptop, can you ping any sites? Try pinging yahoo.com.

First see if you can ping out. Find out your gateway/router ip that you connect to by using the 'ipconfig' command. If you can ping the gateway that means you have connectivity (somewhat). If this fails try a loop-back ping test 'ping 127.0.0.1'. If your loop-back ping test fails (unlikely if they can ping you) you need to reinstall TCP/IP.

Now try to ping outside your gateway like 'ping www.yahoo.com'. (http://www.yahoo.com'.) If that is not successful then try to ping that site by its ip.

Now the next step is to try to surf via your web-browser by ip. If this is successful then it's probably something really simple like the wrong DNS server info typed in.

If you can ping out but can't surf then check your Internet Options and ensure that Proxy Server and Auto Script detection are all *unchecked*.

If the above still can't get you surfing then you either have some operating system errors or corrupt files or the files on your browser may have been corrupted. Also ensure you uninstall any firewall as these are sometimes problematic.

Check your DNS servers. If they aren't there, you won't get out.

if you can ping, etc, the problem may be w/ Internet Explorer(5.0+),,

if you go to add/remove programs.. and select IE.. then install/uninstall...

you will get a list of options... one of them is "repair a damges install of IE" choose that radio button.. hit ok or whatever..

might help ya...

Try to type in an IP address to a website instead of a www.xxx.com. (http://www.x.com.) And if that works, tell @home its their DNS servers.
