They may never change it. I know roadrunner on their new system they put in. Plus they came and upgrade my Modems and lines. The tec told me I could have the same Ip up to 7 months or more. Before It might change. The only it would change is if I installed a different nic then the one I am useing.
Actually all IP's are static on the Comcast system, although they have a DHCP server. Your ip WILL not change, unless you get an entirely new account in another part of the city/state, swap modems(which doesnt always change your ip either), or order a second ip. If you set your ip to static, this will not kick you offline.

I stand corrected.
So, do you set up Comcast@Home subscribers to use DHCP to get their DNS servers and default gateway, or do you enter them manually?
Thanks,

Im on Comcast@Home, and They told me they use dynamic (st00pid L1 tech). Ive been using static, no problems. Never changed once. Gateway I had to enter in manually, along with DNS.

You can contact your provider and ask. When I asked mine they told me it can't be done.
Hope that helps.

Just curious, why would you want to change your ip?

It's pretty unlikely that you have a static IP address. Comcast@Home does not normally provide them for @Home customers. If you have set your TCP/IP stack up for static when the address is actually assigned by DHCP, you will soon find yourself offline, but not before you have fouled up one or more other customers.
Only Comcast@Home can change your IP address. They may or may not be willing to do so.

have you ever used a proxy server. most people only want to change their ip after theyve been banned somewhere. most programs have a input to use a proxy server. if u have been banned from some bb or something, just use a proxy server. most isp wont give u a new ip. u can buy a new one, but thats usually very evpensive. if u really want to change your ip all the time, get dsl, or use a dial up.

If you are trying to get around somewhere you have been banned..
You might try and hijack someone elses IP. Just do a scan of your subnet from .1 to .255 on your gateway.. Find a free one and force it into your TCP stack.. You should be golden.. :-)

You can get a linky 4 port router for $99 and change the IP as often as you like.

How would the linky change your IP?

Of course, if you do this you'll temporarily disconnect another user in your neighborhood. Doubtless you would complain if your service was interuppted, but you advise someone to spoof? Sorry, but that's horrible advice.
Oh, and when you get caught and are back on dial-up won't that be fun?

Just change the MAC of your router and the IP will change, you can do this without reboot you computer or router.
NO IP's are static with @Home! They just reserve the right to change your IP anytime. Good luck tring to get it changed. You should not have traded copyright info on Napster or gotten banned from servers on IRC.

I was not banned from anything. I want to change my IP Adress becuase i was told if some one found our what my IP adress was they could hack into my computer and since some people know what it is they might hack into my computer. Even though my IP technically is not Static they will most likly never change it right. Is it an inconvinence to them to change it.

I don't advocate snatching someone elses IP but if the cable company doesn't verify what MAC address it's coming from, then who's really to blame when John Doe can't obtain his IP?
Okay.. Let me revise this ADVICE.. Scan your subnet to see if any are free on a continual basis. How's that?
Geez, I was just trying to help a kid get back on the porn site he was kicked off of.. :-)
--Matt
And as for the cable company catching you? They don't even know there own network to solve a problem let alone catch you..
Otherwise we wouldn't be burdened with the 128k cap.

Must say I agree with a lot that you've said...
On the topic of protecting yourself 01CableWiz01, I'm running a Linky 4-port router and Black Ice software firewall as well. Set yourself up with similar protection and you'll be fine. Why would someone want to hack you?
how do you scan your SUBNET?
I like WS_Ping ProPack, it's a decent set of tools and the price is reasonable.

I agree.. Linksys is a nice router and then ZoneAlarm will keep you in the clear..
Remember, 99% of the hackers are script kiddies so they may scan you for open ports.. They have to know what to do with them though!
Matt, I was told that in the sutuation you suspected with CW, all one has to do, is to find and delete their cookie. I did, but the only thing happened, their “Favorite” was gone. There are a few cookies in C:\Windows\Cookies which I can’t recognize. If I change my IP address, I’ll have to reregister at all other sites, right?
