View Full Version : Horrible Wireless Stability

My parents have wireless at their house using the regular Linksys Router/WAP in 802.11b. It has the latest firmware and has SSID disabled and is using WEP. The PC has one of the linksys PCI wireless cards installed. It is setup with the WEP key and latest drivers, etc with a static IP address.
Here's the problem: the connection goes down more than it is up. I am at my wit's end because I have been there a thousand times trying to get it to work and I always end up fixing it and then the next day it's down again. I just don't have anymore ideas on what to do for them. Does anyone know of any issues? Here's the issue right now and I know it's setup correctly:
"One or more wireless connections available."
When you click the box, it takes you in a huge circle... connect, one or more found, connect, one or more found...etc. It's a huge pain in the ass.
I told them to buy a long cable to wire it directly because wireless is pretty crappy to begin with.
Another thought I had was the phones that are 2.4. Has anyone had trouble with this and their wireless???
Thanks.
some people have had trouble with their phones, ours works fine.
if it's constantly going down even if they're not on the phone then that wouldn't be it.
I had a Linky BEFSW11s4, never had any problems with it (I know somebody is gonna come in here and say Linksys sux, get a Dlink or something).
Also running a Linksys Wireless G Router and AP now no problems with either.
Since you're running WEP anyways, try re-enabling SSID Broadcast and see if it still gives you issues.
Just an idea really...
You can add Mac Filtering as well if you like, but I hear it's not all that effective, but with WEP and Mac Filtering both it should be fine.
If you get it working I suggest switching to WPA. As It's more secure.

Are you using the Linksys utility to setup the client wireless, or Windows XP?
Some computers, depending on NIC drivers and various other things, don't seem to stay stable on wireless if SSID broadcast is turned off. (dunno why, it's just one of the variables with computers)
When you're at a client machine, can you pick up any other wireless units nearby? Try changing channels?

Hey guys. I guess I could try reenabling the SSID, however the thing is, it keeps seeing the network. When I click to connect to it, it gives me the message that one is found and then wants me to choose again.
That's what keeps recycling.
Thoughts?

Which are you using, Linksys wireless utility, or Windows own built in? WinXP? SP2?
Are these laptops that also had a built in wireless like Centrino?
Having the linksys utility and windows trying to configure the wireless connection together (like YOSC said) will cause the problem your having. Microwaves, 2.4ghz cordless phones, etc. can cause interference. Did you try changing channels in the router? Maybe try changing the channel to something not frequently used like channel 7.

I am using just the Windows configuring utility. I never have a problem at my house or anything setting it up and making it work. I am not using the Linksys utility at all. I was before, but it is a pain.
This is actually a desktop with a Linksys PCI Wireless adapter. It's an old AMD CPU.
The channel is currently set to 12.

What AMD cpu exactly?
one thing you might check for is EMF interferance from plug in power supply's, wires, etc. which are typicly piled up behind computers. I have had "ghost" networks caused by this type of interferance. since you are using WEP I assume you are close to other people who may have their own wireless network, which your software could be detecting. I have also had this type of problem if more than one wireless maneger is running (ACU or Linksys & Access connections)
