View Full Version : ripping DVD to .mpeg or .avi or whatever
wondering how/what to use to rip a couple of my DVDs down to an economical file size, so i can stick them on a laptop (which has a small HDD).
i have and use DVDShrink and DVD Decrypter for backup use (most of my DVD buring is data, not movies. thus, i am sorta ignorant in this field). does either of these have that kind of functionality? or would i need another app?
Auto Gordian Knot (http://www.autogk.me.uk/) is a great program, you rip the dvd to your harddrive with DVD Decryptor and then it turns it into a xvid .avi file and I believe it does mpeg too. You can set the filesize to what you want it to be and the movie comes out great.

fantastic!
thanks a bunch, man. that sounds like exactly what i am looking for.
nah, too complicated.
www.eazyvcd.tk
rips a dvd into either a svcd, xvcd or vcd, easy to use. single click and it utilizes 5 different programs to rip your dvd.
you can either have it make an image file or a mpeg file, which can be burned into a vcd for playing in your laptop or a dvd player.
if you use zooner's choice, you can play the vcd/svcd with VideoLan (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/)

I prefer the GK packages - I have found that on the long flights (when I was weekly from WashDC to SF before I moved here) the Optical drive used too much juice. I could fit the avi file on a cdrom and copy over new movies to the HDD at layovers or at the hotel before heading ot the airport.

yeah, that;s pretty much my M.O. or even just load up a 6 to 10 movies for a trip and not have to fumble through discs.
thanks for the help, guys. toyed with GK last night. just installed it on the second system so i can set up a few processes and let it run w/o using resources on my main rig.
will also check out easyvcd, zooner. GK has lots of options, and i may see how much simpler that one is.

negative!
my choice doesn't require you to burn vcd's, only provides it as an option. It's still a one step solution to creating mpg's.

eh? don;t know where the "negative" came from.
i just meant that Gk has lots of options, but i will see how much simpler easyvcd (your link) is, which would be a good thing. i had no intentions to make vcds, as i wanted file format on a HDD.
anyways, thanks again for the help. :)

Is easyvcd still supported? That file package is dated 2003...
