I have Veritas 9.1 on my server, and it's really more then I need. I'm just looking for a basic backup software, with compression to run a manual backup now and then. I'm using a Seagate drive with TR-5 tapes.
Any ideas?

The backup utility built right into windows? (That Veritas made)
Stomp Software makes my favorite desktop backup software, Backup My PC. www.stompsoft.com but footnotes on their website about it say "Not intended for use on NT Server". Are they referring to old NT 4? Or 2000 (NT 5) or 2003 (NT 6). Might be worth shooting an e-mail question.
Stompsoft bought the rights from Veritas for their Desktop version of Backup Exec a few years ago, so that's what this product is.

I tried that, and it doesn't seem to want to compress the files. Maybe I have to check out all the options again.

Thanks, I'll look into it.
Does your server have NTBackup installed?
If not you can probably get it off the install CD
It's great for scheduled backup jobs, and has the systemstate backup option as well. Plus, it has commandline support to automate using a batch file.

If your tape drive supports hardware compression (which most do) it'll turn that on.
