I run two cable modems from my home. I had an old one and when I had service installed got the new one. I pay for one account, no problem. I went to a friends house to set it up the same way today and got everything working except cable company says that she has to pay for 2 accounts to register 2 mac addresses. They say it is phiscally impossible to run two modems and that she needs to buy a router. WELL DUH! But we have the free modem and don't want to buy a router. Now I know it can be done because I run mine that way, but I also know the cable company has both my mac addresses. Is there a way to get around registering the other mac address?

If your cable ISP uses MAC authentication...no there isn't. Better off getting a broadband router, which lets you share a single IP, and more importantly, gets your computer(s) behind a hardware firewall, so the computers are protected. Sticking a computer on a public IP without being behind a good firewall is simply asking for trouble, it's compromised within a few minutes.
