View Full Version : Please help - Internet not working after installing Speedtec

Hi
I installed Speedtec on Saturday morning, after making a System restore point (when my ADSL was working perfectly with average 50kbps download speeds), and after installation, rebooted my PC (the installation asked to reboot).
After a successful reboot, I was horrified and shocked when I realized that my internet didn't work anymore. I tried mIRC, IE, Firefox, Outlook, Thunderbird, Antivirus Update, nothing wanted to connect. So I rebooted, F8, and selected "Last Known Good Configuration" and my internet connection was back, but its now even slower than 56K! I still get about 30-40kbps download speeds, but sometimes the download pauses at certain intervals and I have to cancel and resume it for it to work.
Email (I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird), is painfully slow also. although I can send plain text messages, I can't send any emails with pictures (>50/60kb in size).
I installed TCP Optimizer and ran it, and my speeds went up a bit, but webpages take FOREVER to load (even google!).
I also tried restoring the System Restore point, but it's still slow, and didn't fix the problem.
I am running Windows XP Professional (no Service pack), AMD 64 3400+, Netgear dg834 router, 1gb ram, 160gb hdd.
I'm connected to the internet via my work's web proxy (no ISP), and a 512KB ADSL link.
How can I get my PC back to normal before I installed that rubbish Speedtec software? I tried
Please help as I'm really really desperate and depressed about this problem.
Best Regards and thanks in advance to everyone who replies to my thread,
Depressed.

Hi
Thanks so much for your prompt reply.
Sorry I forgot to post these results in my first post. Here they are:
I noticed my RWIN is very low and that's what SpeedTec mainly optimizes, so how can I reset it or change it to default (since my RcvWindow limits me to 233kbps) but I have an ADSL 512kbps connection.
TCP options string = 020405b40402080aa36459b60000000001030300
MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1448, which is less than MSS because of Timestamps, or other TCP/IP options used.
Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 5840
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 5840
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)
bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 233.6 kbps (29.2 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 93.44 kbps (11.68 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
Consider increasing your RWIN value to optimize TCP/IP for broadband.
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 58 hops
TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) =
Timestamps (RFC1323) = ON
Note: Timestamps add 12 bytes to the TCP header of each packet, reducing the space available for useful data.
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000

Try thease in the sg optmizer below me to download and install
select - dsl pppoe
check - custom settings
network adapter selection -
check modify all adapters
maxmtu 1492
TTL - 64
TCP Receive Window 17520
MTU Discovery - yes
Black Hole Detect - no
Selective Acks - yes
Max Dup ACKs - 2
TCP 1323 windows scailing is checked
Other Settings tab:
Max Connections per Server - 10
Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 20
Lan Browsing Speedup - optimized
Then select "Apply Changes" and reboot to take effect.
1. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need.
2. Open IE and select tools - internet options - connections -
LAN settings, make sure NOTHING there is checked.
3. ALWAYS connect your modem via ethernet (NIC) and make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it is ISP dependent unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL (the instructions are in my Help & Tips link). If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.
4. Clear your temporary internet files.
5. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 15 seconds.
6. Download and update then do a scan with SpyBot 1.2 http://beam.to/spybotsd & Ad Aware 6.0 http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download to remove any spyware then install and update SpywareBlaster to stay spyware FREE. YOU MUST USE BOTH AD AWARE & SPYBOT TO ENSURE YOU ARE SPYWARE FREE SINCE ONE FINDS WHAT THE OTHER MISSES.
7. Make sure you do the faster web page tweak in Read1st link.
8. If you have Zone Alarm as a firewall uninstall it then visit Zonelabs.com for further instructions on removing it's left over junk.
9. Install Outpost Firewall http://www.agnitum.com\ (http://www.agnitum.com) or Sygate Firewall http://www.sygate.com/ , both have FREE and Pro versions and are heads above ZA.
10. Scan for viruses with your antivirus app, if you do not have one get one IMMEDIATELY, AVG 6.0 http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php is an excellent FREE AV app.
11. Make sure you have ALL of the latest Windows Updates

Thanks once again for your helpful reply.
I tried all your suggestions, but my internet is still slow. :cry: :cry:
I've downloaded a software called "Tweak MASTER", which has a broadband optimization wizard. Should I install it?
Will creating a system restore point get me back to my slow connection (as it is now) if TweakMASTER stops my internet connection from working?

Sudhir

Ok, its working now after another system restore nicely.
Now what setting can I change to improve my download speeds?
Please give me the registry location and name, i dont wanna use software because of what happened with speedtec.

How can I change my RWIN since my downloads max out at 30kbps (even on fast, local servers at off-peak times). It's set at 5840.
Kindly give me the registry location and name and data type (dword?) as I don't want to use TCP IP Optimizer or any optimization software since I don't know what exactly it changes. I'd rather edit the registry and know what's happening.
Regards.
Which new value should I add to edit my RWIN to change it from 5840 to something better?
Current HKLM\Services\CurrentControlSet\tcpip\parmaters :
default ttl : 64
enableicmpredirect = 1
enablepmtubhdetect = 0
enablepmtudiscovery = 0
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize = 255552
Mode = 200
sackopts = 1
Tcp1323Opts = 1
TcpWindowsize = 64240
UseDomainNameDevolution = 1
