Is there a tutorial somewhere on how to use a cable modem after the hardware is set up? I am interested in what to do (particularly network settings, login, etc) after the NIC card is installed, cable modem hooked up and everything is working. Just a generic tutorial would do. Thanks in advance.

Thanks so much. I was looking for what to do after the hardware is working, but you are not connected to the cable provider. Just how do you create the connection? You are in effect on a network right? For example, shouldn’t there be some addresses under network -> TCP/IP? Thanks again.

you plug cablemodem to routers wan port computers to the local ports

first goto start run cmd type ip config /all write down what is saids for dns servers
my computer control panel network connections selcet you active connection
double click tcipip

your ip would 192,168,1,xx
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway would be routers ip
dns is what numbers you wrote down.

Yes, if you setup your computer behind a router, you treat your internet connection as an "always on" connection. Just...have your software set to use your local area network, or TCP, as the connection type. The router maintains your connection on "full time".

Your local network card will, by default, optain a private IP address from your routers built in DHCP service.

I though there should be something in network connections. The reason I am asking all this is my cable modem has no addresses in control panel network TCP/IP or any of the others. The cable modem representative came in and hooked it up. Unfortunatlely, I didn't watch what he did. I am a little confused about this. Doesn't there have to be some addresses on my machine?

it doesn't have to be but imho your better off with a manul ip because dhcp is always searching though a broadcast where if you enter an ip on machine it's more in synch why no searching for that braodcast from router to computer it's more in sync manually.

One final question. How did the cable modem guy set up the orginal connection? He had to login in somewhere somehow. This is the final question and I will stop being a pain in the neck. I am just curious about all of this. Thanks so much for your patience.
