If you are so far away from the exchange that you can only get IDSL, then you won't be getting much on a 56kmodem. Probably 28.8 max. So now the difference is 4:1

Hmm, this sounds interesting. Know of any places where I can test a 56k modem?

US robotics used to have a test number you could call to see if your line supported 56k. but I am sure it is gone. that was before they were 3com.
but my suggestion is to quit moving!!

You need to move 1 more time, but this time you need to move to a place that offers everything: cable, DSL, and wireless. That way you can choose what you want. http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif

Ok, I've been spoiled by once having a GREAT dsl connection then I moved and was forced to put up with cable. Once again, I've moved and my only choice is IDSL or dial up. The IDSL speed available is only 144k and they're charging $60! Currently I've got 56k access for only $12. My question:
I like to download BIG files(50mb or more). Is the extra 88k (IDSL) worth the extra $48? or would I be better off staying with my 56k until somebody shows up with some decent download speeds.

keep dialup man..those are really ****y prices.. i wouldnt pay from any of them at all.. keep dialup and just wait for someone else to come along.. my 2 cents =]
