Im new here so this will be my first post.

I have a home network comprised of 2 PC's and 1 Linksys Etherfast 10/100 5-port Workgroup switch. Im currently on Dial up modem and all works fine.
I am however having AT&T Roadrunner cable modem installed this week.

The Linksys documentation states that I can add a cable modem directly to the Uplink port and run multiple pc's from the hub.

I am unsure if this is true, I dont see a way to assign the switch/hub an I.P adress.
So does this mean I will have to have multiple I.P addresses, one for each comeputer?

Im trying to get away without buying an actual router if possible.

Any info would be appreciated.

I suggest buying a router or converting one of your existing PCs in to a "server". If you decide to go w/a router, you can get one w/o a buil-in hub/switch since you already have a switch.

Glc1:

Thanks for the info and also for being so fast.
I have been reading for a bit prior to this first post. I must say there are some very intelligent people on this board. Its great to have something like this available. I hope I too can offer some info in some cases.

Well, back to the topic.
I was thinking I will do the server client setup. Thats the way my systems are set up now on the Dial-up.
I will do that until I can grab a router that is.
Im looking at the linksys Cable/Dsl router switch all in one deal.
Like you said I do already have the hub/switch but I think I may get rid of it and only have the router.

Thanks

I will do that until I can grab a router that is.You will need 2 NICs in your server, 1 for the cable modem, which should be provide by your ISP), and 1 for the LAN (i.e., your current NIC). The LAN NIC will need an IP and subnet mask of 192.168.0.1 and 255.255.255.0, respectively. You will need to install proxy software, such as Sygate, on the server, or ICS, which is built-in to 98se, 2k, and ME. The client should be setup dynamically.

I suggest you keep the switch b/c you can use it w/either method. If you get rid of it, you will have to buy a router w/a built-in hub/switch.
