Apparently I am not getting the speed I should be getting with ATT@Home in Great Falls, Montana. I have talked with a tier 2 guy and he said he was going to escalate my problem to some network checkup thing. This is the situation: When my service was installed the cable comes from the pole to my house, the guy put a splitter on the line and ran one cable to my computer room and one to the tv room. Could the splitter on the line be the cause of the slowdown?

Have you used the appropriate patch from this (http://www.speedguide.net/Cable_modems/cable_patches.shtml) page? What type of speeds are you getting now?

The splitter could be part of the problem, however, I doubt it's the sole cause, as I don't have a direct drop either and I get great speeds.

I also am struggling with @home service (Comcast) in Fort Wayne, IN. gateway pings range from 56-113, yet the tech said that since there was no packet loss, it didnt qualify as a "broken connection." Personally I think the guy was an idiot.

Any suggestions?

I have applied all applicable patches and they did work, but I did that when I first got @Home. Before the patches this thing crawled, while the patches did speed things up for me, I still am not getting the speed I should be.

Adjust your MTU I had the same problem and I am on Shaw@Home. Go to here "MTU size on @Home cable" http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/Forum2/HTML/009086.html , it is about MTU sizes on @Home.

Where are you getting your numbers from? What sites are you speed checking from?
What time of day are you running the speed checks?

Here is mine from this morning:
Unreliable MSN site: Your line speed: 1236.4 Kbps 151.5 K bytes/sec

DSL site:
Your download speed : 2845932 bps, or 2845 kbps. Browsers would show : about a 347.4 k/sec transfer rate.

Telus.net: Starting download test
Http request: http://speedtest.mybc.com/2meg.test
Http connection opened in 0 milliseconds
Test performed in 23890 milliseconds
Total bytes downloaded: 2097152 bytes
Throughput: 0.66973627 Mbps

I have seen faster speeds than this and I have seen slower speeds. Due to the usage and internet load. These speeds drop off after 4:00 PM.

Don't try this at Home!

I have Comcast too and gateway pings are always over 150...

I called and reemed @home last night. they told me that normal ping to gateway was 7-10, but that my 113 was acceptable cause I had no packet loss. I then had im "push" (reprogram?) the modem. 7-10ms ping now.

HOW do i determine MTU? THis is what I tried:

ping -f -l (size) gateway.

that gave me 1444 as a max without fragging. sound right?

Ok, I'll try setting the maxMTU to 1476, but I am not sure where in the registry to do this, please help me with this. Also I have tested the speeds at different sites including the MSN site at different times during the day and get about the same results.
