i just got my dsl line hooked up (from southwestern bell) a few days ago & it's not much faster than my old 56k modem. downloading files off the internet only dl about 4.5-5 k/sec. i tried dl that 1 meg test file & it took 3 minutes to dl!
i understand there are some tweaks on this site to increase speeds, but just hooking it up, shouldnt it be much faster than this? if so, what can i do?
thanks for any advice

Well it depends, some times folks with a dial connection (take me for example) get download boosters with help a lot if you have a dial connection, however these can mess with the registry so the connection is best used dial connection, and not a broadband connection (cable modem, dsl, and the like). My example was before I got the speedguide patchs I was downloading at roughly 40kbytes a second, after the patches it was I at 240kbytes per second, so the computer could make a BIG difference. On the other hand it could just be a problem with the dsl provider, but the only way to make sure is to run the patches and see if your speed increased.
Welcome to Speed Guide djskywalker...
Try the appropriate patch from this (http://www.speedguide.net/Cable_modems/cable_patches.shtml) page.

i'm curious how fast other people with southwestern bell dsl connections are.
i just have the basic $40 package. i'm getting 40k/sec total download & that's after i applied the PPPoE registry patch.
thanks for any replies
I have bellsouth instead of southwestern and i get 150-165kb down and usually about 27-28kb up.
My package is 1.5/256. These speeds are much faster than my @home was..........thats why i had to drop 'em for dsl.

djskywalker, you should be getting about 85% of the purchased speed package.

Well I do have SWbell and after getting bugs out and tweaks i'm up to 120ksec downloading which shows about 1.2 to 1.4 mps before I was at the low end around 270kps and called them for some support and they said that I was to low for my 384/128 so they turned it up http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif So playing dumb does do wanders http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/wink.gif
