No dial tone, but DSL works

Yesterday, my phone was out of order as one side of the line was open. This was confirmed by Repair Service MLT test showing the line as open 550 feet away from me. Sure enough, they found an open in a splice closure two sections away frommy house where a bird had built a nest.

The surprising thing was that my DSL still worked on the one remaining side of the line sttill working. I never would have believed that was possible.

A bird built a nest and caused a break in your local loop?

That's really bad - where do you live? Isn't the telephone cabling underground?

I don't know about the Outback, but around here, the suburbs usually have aerial construction except in center of the towns. It is fairly common for birds to cause problems in splice closure. If it is open enough for the birds to get in, moisture gets in and caused corrosion. The birds probably think the wires are just more twigs, but they will never tell.
