Have you ever downloaded IE before

ctrl alt delete
02-11-01, 07:45 PM

Lobo
02-11-01, 07:48 PM
Well I suggest go to www.microsoft.com (http://www.microsoft.com) and click on downloads, download center, then select with OS and version you want to download and run from current location :)

ctrl alt delete
02-11-01, 08:07 PM
OK I just did that . Now when i click on the link in your post everything locks up!! Any ideas ?

Lobo
02-11-01, 08:10 PM
No but someone else here might

DrewWiley
02-11-01, 08:14 PM
my idea is someone needs to tell him the exact ftp address of IE so he can enter it in without having to click a link. Unfortunately, I myself am too lazy to do such a thing, Sorry, I've had a long day ;)

Lobo
02-11-01, 08:17 PM
Try typing www.microsoft.com (http://www.microsoft.com) in address bar and click go

DrewWiley
02-11-01, 08:19 PM
Lobo, what i mean is he has to click on links to get to the download site of IE, but his whole problem is that when he clicks on a link he gets a blank page.
Try reading the thread slower, ;)

Lobo
02-11-01, 08:22 PM
Well how did he get here if pages are blank?

DrewWiley
02-11-01, 08:22 PM
hmmm you raise an interesting point...

Lobo
02-11-01, 08:26 PM
I see bunny, I hope he comes back (if he ever left) and tells us whats up, maybe he needs to run scandisk and fix errors, just quessing now

ctrl alt delete
02-11-01, 09:29 PM

If I play a media on rr home page, It says playing @ 32k and the picture is erratic. any quick and simple test for this? And what the heck is PING?
THANKS AGAIN!!!!!

Lobo
02-11-01, 09:31 PM
Have you done anything in your registry, if so what, have you backed it up yet, do you know how

ctrl alt delete
02-11-01, 09:33 PM
As for the spelling, my fingers and brain do not work well togather tonight.I'm still looking into this ...lol

Lobo
02-11-01, 09:35 PM
I'm sorry I don't understand, I can give you directions on how to back up registry

ctrl alt delete
02-11-01, 09:35 PM
No I have not changed anything as I have no idea how.

Lobo
02-11-01, 09:40 PM
OK first I will leave you some instructions, Print them, you cannot test for speed at this hour so if you want to do it tomorrow it's up to youFirst bring up REGEDIT, type REGEDIT in your run box and hit OK.
Under Registry at the top of the box, click on that, now click on Export Registry File, a box will come up asking where you want to export it to, just put it in your C drive, then name it at the bottem of box, Registry.
Click on save.
Now if you ever get in trouble or want the old regestry back, bring REGEDIT back up and click on Registry and click on import registry file, go to your C drive and click on registry and click open, reboot and your good to go.
Anytime you add a new program, backup again, any program, back it up to the same place as the last one, it will overwrite it. If you do not backup after each new program is instaled you will not have those setting's in regestry if you have to backup for some reason.:
1. You probaly need to PRINT these instructions!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go to main page on Speedguide, go to patch page (Listed on left)
2. Download the faster loading of webpages for your OS, download the speedpatch for your OS, becarefull, there are alot of patches on this page.
3. Download the back to default patch for your OS, do not install this patch, just download it in case you ever want to change patches.
4. You may need 1 more patch if you are running WIN 95,98 or 98SE we will know after test.
5. Go to www.dslreports.com/tools (http://www.dslreports.com/tools) bookmark this page as you may wish to return. Run tweak tester, check the verbose box, turn off firewalls, if you have one, copy the results by highlighing everything in the box with your mouse, then hit Ctrl & c, with your key board, come back to Speedguide and in same post you were in reply, when box comes up , cursor blinking at start of box hit Ctrl & v, this will copy results in box so I may look at them.
7. I do not recommend adding any other patches, all these tests change by the minute so don't be fooled an start adding patch after patch.
8. The best time to test for speed is early in the morning when no one (or not many) people are on the net.
9. Nothing should be running during any test, no virus stuff, firewalls,
and always clear (Delete, no this will not harm your system) your temp internet files before each test, not once during testing, after each test.
10. Do not add other speed patches on top of each other, always go back to default before trying another patch, I am aware of only one patch that will remove previous patch without having to return to default.
11. In the future, here are some other sites you may wish to visit, go to www.testmyspeed.com. (http://www.testmyspeed.com.) Please bookmark that page as well as www.pcpitstop.com (http://www.pcpitstop.com) so you may return. Also another good dowload site would be www.happypuppy.com (http://www.happypuppy.com) click on 10 demos and a large download file, do not download the whole file, just most of it.
12. You may in the future wish to go to www.AnalogX.com (http://www.AnalogX.com) and download Net Stat Live, run this while downloading a large file.
13. Please take your time and good luck. I would suggest at least 128 RAM and read up on all this, but be care full.
14. The most accurate way of testing speed is downloading large file as explained above from somewhere like www.happypuppy.com (http://www.happypuppy.com) (not all of it, just most of it). All other speed test sites will vary.
When refering to speed Kb is Kilobits
KB is Kilobytes

Run a repair on your browers, Plus make sure all the files of your provider before you got this one is out of the computer, Plus make sure in your Control panel that if you used dail up. Turn that off in the Internet explorer properties. Then click on lan make sure none of the box's in there are check . Then go to securty in your explorer and set it to custom settings make sure all the boxes are enable in custom settings are check accept for the on that says controls not marked safe. when you are done there. go into network settings and make sure if you were on dailup before you remove all protocols protaining to this only. Then click on the TCP/IP protocol and make sure under wins configuration- click on Use DHCP for wins resolution. Then under Ip address tab click on obtain Ip automaticly. then use the default patch from speedguide.reboot computer. then to start out with try the Sguide tweak for your Os. If it dose not remove it and try cable nuts. But each time you switch patches use the default Patch. You should only need one Patch. Back your reg up first by typeing scanreg in the run command on the menu. when the box pops up it will ask if you want back the reg up click on yes. This should get you up and running right. Plus your last pings look better and and the rest look fine. but if you do as I just said you should pick up some more speed. Plus remember to apply the VCTPFIX.386 Exe. to. this will allow you to enable larger rwin settings wich these tweeks apply. If you need more help email me. To me it sounds like you added to many tweeks at once. Plus the computer may have been set up for dail up service. After you have tried this Please email or post your results. But if none of this helps you may need to reformat and restore. Wich I doubt. But could be possible. After if all this is done and we can not get know speed even if you reformat, If you have to. You may have to call your provider. but frist do as i said and lets see what happens. Good Luck! ;) ;)

Sir but that did not worh either, I don't understand why not but the best thing to do would be to put you back like you were when you got here, my intructions told you to backup registry, type REGEDIT in run box off of start button, when registry box comes up, click on regestry, and them on import registry file, click on the registry you saved, click on save, reboot, your done

Lobo, Thanks , But if he bought a store bought computer like Hewlett Packered. He is going to run in to this. More then likely Its reg is set up for dail up. They have there own internet service. If he follows what I said this should get him up and running. Most computers like that are overloaded with software and set up for dailup. Which if the person who setup His cable Internet didn't bother to take the time to do it right. This is usally what happens. If he doesn't try some of the things or at least check them he is going to keep asking you to fix it. Or its going to come down to the reg is so messed up. he will have to restore his os.. Believe I have seen it before. They bring them in the shop and say they don't know whats wrong with them. Then it ends up costing them about eighty dollors. Just to have it reformatted. Or they will have to sit on the phone have the have the night with tec and still not get it fixed. ;) If all else fails he would be better off calling his provider and telling him he is getting no speed. And let them check it out before the reg is so over loaded with patches. It won't run.

Lobo, I do agree it looks a lot better. All he needs to do now is add the web page patch and he should be fine. Plus leave the reg alone. Plus have him run a speed check to. besides the tweak test. Then he will know for sure if this has helped him out. As far as speeding him up. GoodLuck to him! ;) There are a few things to add to the reg that work for pings. But sense he is new at this. I will wait a while till he gets use to tweaking.Like I said the reg is nothing to mes around with if you don't know that much about it. Thanks lobo for helping the guy a little more. We all have to start out from someone who can helps us. GoodJob Lobo :D :D
