I recently added a wireless card to my desktop PC. After setting it up I can't get it to work. I've followed everything to a T, even pulled everything out and put it back in. The card is a Belkin. I've loaded the belkin wireless utility. I can connect to my wireless router/modem combo and i can ping IP addresses just not URLs. I finally called the tech line at belkin and they told me it was a DNS problem and I needed to manually set my DNS. I eventually found the addresses and entered them into the DNS configuration page. (oh i've got Micorsoft ME on my desktop) After i put them in, it asks me for a host and won't let me leave that page until i put it in. According to verizon (my service provider) the info should be:
Primary DNS: 4.2.2.1
Secondary DNS: 4.2.2.2
Domain: dsl.verizon.net
The problem is it won't let me leave that setup screen without a host. Is there a way to find out what the host should be using one of my other computers using the network? Does it sound like my problem is more than DNS?
Other general info:
I have 2 other computers (laptops) that work fine. 1 PC, 1 MAC
I have access to my router config page, but i'm not sure where to find DNS info there, that's why i went to the verizon site. The router/modem combo is made by westell, called the gateway versalink.
I tried to plug the PC in question straight into the router (wired connection) and have the same problem.
I've tried command prompt: ipconfig/dnsflush, release, renew,
I've also tired to disable my wired nic card while running just the wireless card and had no change.
I may have the opportunity to upgrade to XP, would that solve the problem?
Any help would be great.
UPDATE!
I think i found the required info on my router config page
Host: dslrouter
Domain: myhome.westell.com
4.2.2.4
4.2.2.5
Entered it into the DNS config in windows and now i can ping both IP and URLs from the command prompt. So now i just can't use IE or Netscape. On IE i'm still getting the "Cannot find server or DNS error" error message. In my email client(FirstClass), when i try to log in, it says, could not open network socket
again any help would be great.
