View Full Version : Internet speed degrading when people download from me.
I am a RR user down in Central Florida, and whenever people download stuff from my local ftp server, my internet connection suffers badly. For example, I usually get 180 kbytes per second on MSNs bandwidth meter, but when one person (just one) starts to download a file from my ftp server, MSNs bandwidth meter takes me down to 10 kbytes per second. I know that RR supports 1.5 mbits downstream and 384k upstream, but why are my download capabilities hurting so much when someone downloads from me. Also, the one person download from my ftp lives down the street, and he is using RR as well. He also has the same problem. If you need any more details, let me know.

Um, LOL.
I was under the inpression that download speeds and upload speeds do not affect one another on a asyncronous connection. Like ADSL or Cable. Or do I have it backwards with syncronous SDSL. What I do not understand is how can my friend downloading from my ftp at 25 kbytes a sec slow my connection down to a crawl. I go from 180 to 10 kbytes. We have been trying to figure this out all day. Plus I have never noticed this before. Perhaps RR changed something, or perhaps I screwed something up. While he is downloading, my ping to any web site is over 1000ms. He can be downloading and I will ping www.yahoo.com (http://www.yahoo.com) and it will reply in 1000ms average. As soon as he stops downloading, my ping to yahoo goes back to 30 - 50ms.

Every use of the Internet that is connection-based, which includes FTP and browsing, uses bandwidth both directions. When you try to ping while he is downloading, your ping packets are competing with his download for space on the cable. Moreover, all the data he FTP's from you appears on the cable twice - once going upstream from you and once going downstream from the router back to him.
RR does not permit the operation of servers for several reasons, including the problem you are encountering. They do monitor the system, and you may get caught.
