I have two computers, one being Windows XP PRO and the other Window XP HOME edition. While I can succesfully connect each to a hub and the internet, I am trying to make the two of them connect with only a CAT5 crossover cable (store bought, not homemade).
Also, I have ensured that the Local Area connection (which normally connects to a hub, but now has the crosssover CAT5 plugged in) has been disabled and then enabled and the windows firewall turned off. I have also turned off my own firewall software (ZoneAlarm).
Having browsed several forums, I followed the suggestion that each computer has a different name, but each has the same WORKGROUP name. Each computer has a shared folder, so File Sharing IS enabled.
FYI, both PCs are running SP2 (one is XP HOME SP2 and the other XP PRO SP2).
However, when the computers are connected , each one shows "Limited or no connectivity" and an exclamation mark in the connection icon in the icon tray.
A brief search for software tools only shows LPT connectivity software for PC-PC transfers. I hoped that something might be out there that would provide more diagnostic information. I realize this SHOULD be a simple connection automatically handled by Windows.
FYI, I have also tried re-running the network connectivity wizard to define an "other" PC-PC connection, which also did not work.
What am I missing?
