Installed Motorola Surfboard SB5100, now slower
Hello everyone, I'm located in Fairfax, VA. I use Cox Communications cable and I decided to stop renting their modem and buy a Motorola Surfboard SB5100. I've heard very good reviews and I installed it just fine. I called up my ISP, registered my MAC address for the SB5100, and it worked fine. However, today it is running extremely slow. I don't think it's because of the traffic in my area either because at around 3-4am, it was still running extremely slow.
It may not be the modem though. I plugged back in my rental modem and it was still slow, whereas it used to be fast. Maybe when I registered the MAC address, the operator did something funky? I don't know.
I was playing an online game and my ping was in the 1000's. I got kicked from every server because of my poor ping. My internet browsing is very sluggish as well.
Do you guys have any suggestions? My computer is conencted to a Linksys router, which routes connection to other computers in the household. I am the main computer, to which the actual modem is connected to.
My computer specs are:
Dell Dimension Desktop 4600 Series
2.66 GHz processor Pentium 4
768MB RAM
40GB harddrive
nVidia Ge Force FX5200 graphics card
I ran a Trace Route test and these were the results: (they didnt look good at all...)
http://www.chrisnguyen.net/traceroute.jpg
I also ran a Speedguide TCP/IP analyzer test:
TCP options string = 020405b401010402
MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.
Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 64240
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2569.6 kbps (321.2 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1027.84 kbps (128.48 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 119 hops
TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000
I did delete all my temp interenet files, ran spyware tests and virus tests, and tried restarting my computer. My average speed test results were ranging from 82kbps-700kbps which is still not as high as it normally is.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated guys, Thanks a lot for reading.
