I use: http://nyc.speakeasy.net - as my local speed-test server, here in New York City.

Also, another good server to test your downstream channel is the OOL Speed-test here: ftp://ftp1.optonline.net/pub/test64 - it's an 64.0 MB file. Your test should last til' 30%, then, note your transfer rate, and cancel the download. You then take your value and multiply it by 8.192 - and it should come out to your speed in kilobits per second.

reduce size of measured MTU to value 1380 bits (unclean reason)
BTW it was explained by Rich Carlson that server

IMO all TCP/Web100 Network Diagnostic Tool servers
from years still are experimental (means far from perfect)
still are problems with explanations of measurements

IMVHO interesting tests but still should NOT be recomended.
until more perfect versions can be aviable

Try to find a site that's close to you. Speakeasy offers a bunch of them around the country. The idea is that if your performance isn't great, you can give them a shot instead. (And from what I've heard, they're good.)

The reason I put in a good word for Speakeasy is that these tests aren't free, so it's a free service they offer. So if your connection isn't up to snuff, take a look at what they offer.

The answer is different for everyone, as the best test of your true connection should be done before leaving your ISPs gateway, or if there are none locally to your ISP, one that shares their same backbone or is nearby. Any others, and you may have too many hops from your rig to the test site, and the results will not be accurate.
