seriously, why are there so many newbie questions? i have gotten bored of this forum. it used to be fun but i keep hearing the question "what's the best mtu?" all the time. really annoying. last good thing on this forum was the winsock32.dll and tcpip.sys file in ram. somebody create a non-newbie section.

With respect, do you remember being a newbie? We all are at everything at some stage, and there's nothing wrong with it. If you don't ask, you'll never know...

If questions are posed sensibly, and answers/suggestions are followed, where's the problem?

I'd agree that a newbie section would possibly filter the questions, but when people are so obliging with their advice, I don't see the harm in it.

Admittedly, if newbies (myself included) spent time searching and reading through old threads then some answers would be found without needing to ask anew, BUT as is often said in here, not all settings are suitable, and vary per user so folks have to ask.

well first off,97 posts does not make you mcse certified.97 is still kinda new,and second ofall, thats what this forum is for is to ask questions, there are no stupid questions if you don't know it,and thirdly,if you are so bored with this forum then feel free to leave!we don't need that kind of posts here, and if you are going to post crap like that then go to the general forum.

Hey Neo86. I personally feel I have a pretty good handle (at least above average) on computer related problems. And outside of setting up a small home network I know nothing about Internet concepts etc.. I do not have a connection at home and do all of this correspondence from work. And at work it is way too easy just to get one of the IT people to tweak or ask a question so I have never really bothered retaining the information. Now that I will be optaining a DSL line at home in the next few weeks I will be on my own and have a million questions.

Sorry they bother you. I'm over it.

Bottom line:You can never learn enough! I sure don't mind someone asking a question, even if it's been answered a few times on the same page. I find it interesting to see how different people respond to different situations. I'm still learning something new everyday and I think that should be your goal too!

It seems to me that issue is not being a Newbie, it seems that more and more people lost the page with the word “Search” in their dictionary.

It is easier to just ask instead of clicking search, typing (as an example) MTU, and read previous Posts.

May be if people will link to the answer, instead of re-answering others will get the point.

no the real problem is not the people with real questions even the same one over and over , but the real problem is people like davem or neurotoxin that "tweek up" their system every day then when they have one little problem for even a second they come to speed guide and say @Home capped this or that or @Home did this or that and they dont even have a clue about anything like their modem "ring" times ect (i think he means ping) or the morons that bitch about how the upload cap sux for running a server . well it is morons like you that do not know how to run a server much less that you r not supposed to run a server on @Home and you ignore it then they have to cap everybody cause of you then you bitch about not getting your money's worth but you r too cheap to pay for the service you really want you want to mouch the band width of others like a leach and get everyone capped way to go fools     :( :o :D ;)

I dont tweak my 3 computers every day.

I have only posted Valid problems with the @home network. And Valid information to help "newbies" with any of their problems.

And the real problem is with people like rodrod5 who can't believe that some geographical area on the @home network could possible offer different types of service, or worse yet, force slower servere to the customers.

On the other hand, rodrod5 makes 3 prank user names to completely fill my valid and bonafide post, only to make it completely filled with garbage of his own beliefs and god like stature.

I had to delete 3 threads so far because of rodrod5. I really hope the moderators block his IP address, so that the rest of us can get something done around here !

Have you read the Members Policy recently? AT&T doesn't promote servers, but they no longer prohibit them. They merely state that you are allowing others into your computer which is your sole responsibility to protect yourself.

As well as running a server, I have no problems with port forwarding on my router, or setting up ServU and assigning user and group rights to the folders I want to allow somebody to connect to.
I will open my server for my brother 300 miles away so we can send information back and forth. I do not run a public server, I have no need. I don't even run a game server, once again I have no need.

I think your blatent disreguard for users on this forum in unacceptable.

Go to the @home memebrs services, the members policy is there. I quoted it from there web page.

Are you too dumb to figure out how to log into member services on http://home.excite.com

Unless you're not an AT@T @home customer, then you wouldn't have access to the members services policies, as only AT&T subscribers can access the site.

You may not run a server in connection with the @Home residential service, nor may you provide network services to others via the @Home residential service. The @Home residential service includes personal Webspace accounts for publishing personal Web pages. Examples of prohibited uses include, but are not limited to, running servers for mail, http, ftp, irc, and dhcp, and multi-user interactive forums. For information about @Work products for commercial or network services purposes, including commercial-grade remote LAN access, please see http://work.home.net.
http://www.home.com/support/aup/

Can I attach a server to your network?
No. The @Home service is for private, residential use only and does not support or allow servers of any kind. However, @Work® offers products that allow the kind of connectivity a server requires. For more information, please visit @Work. http://www.attt@home.com/qa.html#server

The Services use resources that are shared with many other customers. Moreover, the Services provide access to the Internet which is used by millions of other users. Each user benefits by being able to share resources and communicate almost effortlessly with other members of the user community. However, as with any community, the benefits and privileges available from the Services, and the Internet in general, must be balanced with duties and responsibilities so that other users can also have a productive experience.

Newbies bounce in to ask a question, and whether it is or not, they usually don't come back. Now, I'm not really implying that about many of the "newbie" threads here, but you have to admit that its like that on most BB's.

I visit other discussion forums on other web sites from time to time, and compared to what is posted here, those other web sites lack the full range of user support. SpeedGuide has more “newbies” than any other discussion forum, and although that can be a bother to those who have moved past the MTU discussion, it behooves the advanced reader to quickly recognize a “newbie” post and move on to a post that sparks the intellect of the reader.

While other web sites become stale and take on the appearance of inbreeding, SpeedGuide invites the new through helpful technical support, and that appreciation is passed on to new users. In time, those new users will become the heart of SpeedGuide. They invite boredom, humor and the opportunity to look at old problems a new way.

Bring on the “newbies”. It’s nice they like to spend time here. Lobo might not agree as he addresses the bulk of newbie inquiries.

Well put.

As with the people complaining about the upload cap...I will bet more than the majority of users here have that cap and DEAL with it. Running servers on @home may or may not be prohibited (I'm not going to get into that) but the fact is, u'r upload is capped anyways so it makes running a server pointless. If they didn't have caps, imagine two people on u'r street running a server with 8 users on them, sucking up the entire bandwidth for everyone...Now you come along and say "damnit, I'm only getting 2KB upload..this sucks..blah blah blah".

Now what would you rather have...capped or uncapped?

As with the question of why there are so many newbie questions here...that is generally what this is for...to help others out...No one is making you stay here and read through all the posts.

Remember people, Speedguide.net is FREE. The mods and admins, along with the users, have put a lot of work into this place to make it the best and most informative message board relating to computer problems. So the next time u want to bitch about something, remember that...you aren't paying a damn thing to be heard here and there are many willing and able people to help you with your problems.

hey there has been alot of newbies but i was one and i still consider my self a newbie and if you dont liek it screw off it is a public fourm ppl get their questions awnsered and every one is happie if you do see soem one asking a question you just saw in another thread put a link in there or just do a simple search on dogpile or yahoo or some thing and find them the awnser and with in a few dayd that post will be about 2 or 3 pages back and you probaly will never see it again about the @home cap oh well live with that too if you want some thing faster for a server dont be cheap pay the money i live the cap even tho mine is not at 128kbps mine is more around 300kbps but i dont get those upload speeds all the time and besides if they do run a server and @home does not allow that to happin they check your ports for any thing that might be a server and if they find one they will disconect youl from their services so good luck and @work is good to use if you plan on running a server so admin please end this post cuz it is pathtic that people need to complain all the time and if you see some thing abotu the @home upload cap you should just end those post right when you see them well at least those are my thoughts

Joined tonight, this is my second post, bona fide newbie according to certain standards. But I am an @man (contract @home installer) and really enjoy seeing the range of concerns that people have. I can barf specs all night long with the big dawgs & rag on newbies, but to what end? NONE OF US would be here if the computing community didn't take the newbies under their collective wings and nurture them. So if doing one's share to encourage the growth of our industry is too weighty of a task, then start a "geeks only" site and let those of us who enjoy helping others do our thing here.

I'll be back. (Arnold)
