just got the rest of the (networking) hardware in, so i wont have anything up until probably Friday, but here;s what i picked up....
Intel PRO 1000 MT Gb NICs for the 2 clinets
3Com 3C996B-T Gb Server NIC for the server (will try it in my old gaming system first, since it has better memory bandwidth)
Zyxel Gb switch
i have 600Kbps upstream at the router/CPE (old reliable Zyxel 642R. i am keen on Zyxel, BTW :p ) to work with. tests @520 pretty much everywhere on the net, i am am thinking like 8ppls. maybe more or less, depending on how things pan out. don;t know how the ping times will pan out for whoever wants to play, since i am on the west coast, and buried deep in SBCs network, lol .
anyways, were i to set up a small HL2 server, what would peeps prefer? CS or HL2:dm? i am still wading through the configs, and i haven;'t found a server manager that would make life easier yet, so it won;t be something exotic. just a place for people to get in and play on.
