Well everyone, this is not looking too good here: http://biz.yahoo.com/rf/010423/waa002030_2.html
It used to be that @Home was forecasted to make money in mid 2002. Not anymore...they are now not forecasted to make any money until 2003 and that is not etched in stone yet. @Home has never made 1 penny... http://earnings.nasdaq.com/earnings/earnings_forecast.asp?symbol=ATHM%60&selected=ATHM%60
Also, they are laying off some people as well. Stock is down in the 3's now. Covad is in the same situation, they have been de-listed from the Nasdaq and are now at .83 cents per share. It is not looking too good for broadbands out there people. Also, AOL is not doing that well as well, they have 45 billion dollars in debt: http://www.billparish.com/20010404americaonline.html
good time for that power line internet and fiber optic stuff.

Dont worry so much about the content, worry about the provider( or backbone). If the cable or dsl provider is doing well your service is insured. @Home may be going by the way side. So what! What we really want is the connection. Which is actually provided by the cable or phone company in your area. @home is getting kicked to the curb in our area and were going to run it ourselves.(at least that's the gossip)Anyhow whom among us actually uses the home page they give you. :)

Yep, we are headed down a road of having 2 broadband providers, the local phone company (IE SBC) and the local cable company. Maybe a few wireless systems mixed in. I think that the cable companies could branch out on their own in the coming years.

I do know that Cox Comunications already runs an independat system in Paris, Texas.
I am so mad at @Home right now.
First they finally hit us with the 128kbit upload cap.
But this week they introduced the 1200 kbit downdload cap !!!
No Lie!
When I hit 1200 kbits/sec download the pings to my modems hit 900ms until the download is finished!
What a crock!
My contract states 128 kbit up and up to 100 times a 28.8 down.
Thats only 40 times a 28.8 and we were 4.5 mbit/s for 3 months and 6.5 mbit/sec for a month before that.
The download cap is not suposed to be there and they denie implementing it.
Instead they say its probably bandwidth.
It isn't a bandwidth problem when my modem rings me back at 900ms !!!! Thats a modem induced CAP!

Haven't heard anything about any download caps on @Home at all. Have you checked speeds off of an @Home proxy such as ftp://ftp.home.net or http://24.0.0.71/download ?
My most stable download speed is from members.home.com.
This causes pings to my modem and to SFBAY area in excess of 1200 ms. And 100% packet loss outside of the @home network until the download is finished !!!
It's a download cap all right. My modem High Ping is the same on uploads and it now on the new download capsin my area.

With the recent problems on the members.home.net site (IE idiots running porno, song and warez servers), it is not a good speed test. They did move the members.home.net to a faster back bone, but, they are still very concerned about idiots. I heard that a few hundred accounts were using in excess of 6 gigabytes a month. The monthly limit is 300 megabytes. @Home may have limited just the members.home.net server and rightfully so...it was out of control. A good speed test would be to start the download of the @Home 1.2 software here: http://24.0.0.71/download and check the speed. I personally do not usually run the test for more than 20 or 30 seconds at a time.
I get better speed from members.home.com than I do from the other site you mention.
I've never had a problem using members.home.com for a speed test, but I also use ftp.mcafee.com, ftp.lucasarts.com and ftp.cisco.com, as all three have provided me with more than 6 mbits/sec on my line before we got download capped!

Wow, I will have to try those sites. Most of the time, I do not get anything over 3 megabits off the proxy and on a recent download of an ISO, I got 65-89k per second on a large download. Servers on the internet are just not fast enough these days.

DaveM:
The problem is most likely in your configuration or the connection to the specific site. If the block size for the connection is 576 you will get 1200 kilobytes max.
