Hi eveyone,

I just switched over to Verizon's 3.0/768 package from Comcast's 4.0/384 and I have a few questions.

This is the first time I've used DSL. I had cable for like 5 years and this is all new to me.

Verizon shipped me a Westell 372W Wireless Router/Modem and I am having problems configuring it.

I really don't need a router at all for what my uses are. When I had cable I simply used Internet Connection Sharing and (for what I need it for, it worked great).

However I need my server pc to have a normal IP address, so I am using the "Single Static IP' option on the router. (I know Verizon uses Dynamic IP's but that is how its labled in the router).

Here are my problems:

The "passthrough" ip works fine. The server pc has a normal wan ip that Verizon supplies. My second pc uses a local ip (192.XXX.XXX etc) that the router provides.

I can't share files or printers on the network unless I turn off the "single static ip" option on the router. I have the firewall and wireless turned off on the router.

I use my server pc to host certain servers for games, and unless I let the ip passthrough the router and get assigned to the pc, they wont broadcast. Is there a way around this? How can I share files while using the single static ip option on the router?

I'm on cable, my WAN IP address is dynamic. I have only ever seen it change once in the 8 or so years I've had it. I think you would be much better off putting both PC's behind the router and using it's built in firewall. Try using static IP's on the LAN side and port forward to the game server PC's IP address. I don't know what ports off hand but I think it's doable. There are a couple of people here that run game servers that should be able to help you out.

I couldn't find anything regarding that modem model, but check to see if ti has a DMZ option. This forwards all inbound connections to one machine behind the router (i.e your games machine), but all machines behind the router will still have internal (192.168) IPs.

This should achieve what you are looking for. :)

Passthough Ip is likely the same thing as putting the PC in the DMZ. The file sharing problem is because one PC has a private IP 192.168.xxx.xxx and the other one in the DMZ doesn't. Too get it to work you will have to bind file and print sharing to TC-PIP, and probably also enable net-bios over TC-PIP for it to work. If you share folders on the PC in the DMZ you better use a good password because they will be open to anybody on the internet. File sharing worked with ICS because the two NIC's tyeing the PC's together both had private IP's and were likely on the same workgroup. When I was using ICS I made sure to bind file and print sharing to netbeui only. This isolated my shared folders from the internet. It was just extra protection that I wanted.

You need to put the modem in brige mode then configure the router for pppoe mode by enthering username and password there for you don't have to worry about dmz or port mapping on modem.

Hi, All:

I have the exact question as Aceon fire had. I am using Win XP Pro and westell 327w router from Verizon. Can you tell me how to fix the problem in detail?

If you wish to run your PC on a public IP address......(it's suicide for your computer...but..)....just flip the Westell unit into bridged mode. It's set in the web management. Verizons support will always walk you through flipping it over to bridged mode if you call them.....I do it a few times a year on setups.
