View Full Version : Am I doomed to eternal slowness? Please help!

My modem pauses for extended periods of time before and during transfers. Strangely enough, it even does this when I try to view files on http://localhost (I have MS Personal Web Server installed). Sometimes it can take up to ten to fifteen seconds before the activity light on the modem even goes off.

However, I checked on both CNet's Bandwidth meter and dslreports.com and BOTH said that my connection was fine.

This has been happening to me ever since the service was activated. I tried using those network tweaker programs to see if it would work. When they didn't work, I ended up reinstalling Windows. No improvement. I tried installing those tweaks on the Cable/DSL page, and they helped with improving the speeds of transfers, but not with the frequent pausing. Hell, I've even tried changing my CPU's BUS speed from 66MHz to 100.

I asked my friends if this ever happens to them and how often and they both said every few *days* or *weeks*... THIS HAPPENS TO ME SEVERAL TIMES AN HOUR!

If someone could please help, I would SERIOUSLY appreciate it.

My PC is:
-Celeron 600MHz
-128MB SDRAM PC100
-10GB HD
-Netgear FA311 Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter (plugged into the second PCI slot)
-Infospeed DSL Modem (Westell)

Software is:
-Windows Me
-VerizonDSL (WinPOET)

If you haven't already done so, upgrade your version of WinPoET to the latest version or use an alternative PPPoE software.

If that doesn't work, contact Verizon TS and get them to solve the problem. Once you get past the first line of TS, they are usually quite helpful.
