Hi people..I've been reading this board and all your posts for some time now. There's always something for me to learn.Until now, I havent had any problems.Maybe someone here can help...my ISP's tech support is baffled.

Here goes. The other day, I installed Windows ME.After I was done with the install, i shut my system down..and plugged the cord from my NIC Card to my modem..then restared. It goes fine until the GUI is about to load ..THEN my system restarts..get's to the same point , just before the GUI loads then restarts AGAIN.It'll loop endlessly if i let it.All is fine after I unplug the cord connecting the cable modem and NIC card..WinME boots without a hitch.I even tried plugging the cord into the modem while ME is up and running..guess what..as soon as that plug is placed into the cable modem..windows goes black and restarts.

I've checked and from what I can tell..there are no resourse conflicts anywhere..but yet..something strange is going on.

My Nic Card is an Ovislink Realtek RTL8139(A/B/C/8130) PCI Fast Ethernet NIC..my modem is a 3Com Home Connect External.
Has anyone heard of this problem before?Or encountered it themselves?Any insight, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

2112 Welcome into the forum.
Suggestions uhm...This one is gonna jump all over tha place.
Without checking my notes..plus its early. After having this happen. I beleive it had something to do with the bios and that I had to turn on the plug & play OS aware feature.

I Beleive I almost ended up reloading ME and I also used a different realtek driver. I think it was the driver in the end that I forced it to use. Instead of the one ME wanted.
Network cards load on bootup so the other thing to look at is the autoexec.bat file, if one exsists. See if there is any refrence to networking in there. If there is a line type the word "rem" at the beginning of that line to turn it off.
I know its weird I saw it reboot several times. When I got it to boot and work it still didn't seem right. But that was before the different driver. I never found out exactely why it did it. I was just happy it worked. I have that system here right now I'll get the driver I used and the site I got it off of.
I was pluging into a LAN not a Modem like you are.
I will warn you about one thing if your MB has the VIA chip on it and Microsoft updates tells you to use there driver it will mess it up. Turn off auto updates in ME.

Well you asked for suggestions I'll look for that driver also.
Unless you get this fixed before that.

Check the web site for your nic! I have noticed most of them now have upgrades for there cards. Plus did you do a upgrade or a full install. A upgrade is more likly to cause this problem. Then a full install. As far as your bios it should already be enabled for plug and play. But you can check it anyway. If your card dose not have a up date you might need to replace it. Or maybe it was direct to a different Irq, Check that out to. Hope this helps

If it's a 10/100 Nic then set the nic to half duplex. In network neighborhood, dbl click your nic card / adapter , under advanced choose connection type, half duplex. Or like other have said update the drives and bypass the WIN ME default drivers.

Thanks for the replies!i appreciate each and everyone of them.I'll have time tomorrow to do the WIndows Me installation, so we'll see what happens.
dannjr,if you could get ahold of that driver, that would definitly be above and beyond http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/redface.gif)Thanks for the reply..esp the part concerning the Via chipset..which..my board does have.
Thanks again http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/redface.gif)

Yep took me a little while to get back it happens once in a while.
I got busy re-writing a win2k tweak that I hope to have done by monday or tomarrow.
Any way you have your choice of 3 very standard very up to date drivers from this company below I entered the nsgfc2206 on mine and it worked right away.
It also cured the problem I was having. http://www.netsurfusa.com

nsgfc2206
nsgfc2206a
GFC2206M

The thing I found in my notes was that the card had the wake on lan feature built in and so did the Mother board as soon as I put in the driver for the card that took the wake on lan feature out of the card it was fixed.
You will have to tell windows to use the driver even if it tells you its older than the one you have.

The VIA chip set is a real fun animal VIA makes it difficult enough to get to the drivers esp. the special ones then Microsoft goes and tell you that the driver you using is out of date and you use it.
I spent 3 hours getting it straightend out. Because the VIA I had on board acted like the newer one..

Hope this works out for you.
