Hello I have Verizon DSL. They recently sent me two modems by accident. One is a router type modem and the other is a regular DSL modem. I hooked up my router modem to the computer. I was wondering if it is possible instead of buying a 70$ adapter, if I could use that spare modem and hook it up with the PS2 w/o the use of a computer.

If the modem is indeed running only in bridged mode, you'll need something to perform the PPPoE authentication to allow you to log into Verizon. Why not just have the playstation behind your current router?

I wanted to see if I could use this spare modem that Verizon isn't interested in getting backjm and see if i could save $70. Is it possible though?

You need to authenticate with Verizon....PPPoE, you have a username and a password.
That's usually done through...
A) A router which supports PPPoE authentication and logs on for you, and your plug your computer(s) into the LAN side of the router.
B) Having a computer plugged into your modem, and software on the computer does the PPPoE login for you...such as the built in PPPoE support in Windows XP, or through 3rd party software like EnterNet, WinPoet, etc.
Now, you already have your router in place, running, why not just connect your game console to that?

I have a router but it's on another level of my house and I was just wondering if it was possible to avoid buying another wireless adapter to connect the PS2 onto the internet
