Extra fast speeds momentarily

I have had cable for about 2 months, and i have noticed that a couple times, i have momentarily gotten speeds well above what i am supposed to get. What happens (in the IE download box) is that it starts at about 100k, shoots to about 450k for about 2 seconds, goes way up to abotu 800k for about 3 seconds and settles back down at about 350k for the remainder of the download. I know that this couldn't just be IE trying to calculate a varying speed, because the file is finished way to fast. A 3meg file@300k in 10secs and the same 3meg file@the varying speed in 7secs (secs are not actual time, just analogy) just doesn't add up. Just curious if this is just me or what. I'm in South TX RoadRunner.

Those are more then likely just speed bursts. It slows down cuz the server cant keep the speed up its giving you. But hey 800k for 3 secs is 2.4 megs so enjoy those great bursts.

how do you even get 350K on rr? are you in houston by chance? i thought rr was capped at 2mbits?

I am San Antonio. I'm not sure how i get it, but a lot of times i linger at 200-300 especially from myspace at night. I also do most of my downloading at night time, so that probably also has somethign to do with it

It's not always that. It can actually be a quick burst of speed.

Well what happenes is that when it starts downloading it starts comming down at your connection speed but if the spped that your connected to that site is lower then your actual download speed is gons start going up, then you get what you call the burst, then that will depend on internet trafic and people who are trying to download the same file so it starts slowing down a little and then it's starts getting packet lost so it's starts reducing speed again to avoid the lost of data thats where the MAXMTU and the PMTUDiscovery the comes in play if the PMTUDiscovery is set to 1 it will set the MAXMTU to whatever the servers speed is at the moment of the packet lost, I am still experimenting with this, I beleive that there are moments where it should be set to 1 and moments where it should be turned off because the other server could have bad packet lost and the speed will keep going down.

Hi all, jsut thought i'd tell you about the uk cable modems which have just come out here in liverpool. you complain about 300k download speeds? i never get more than 50k constant - thats how ****e we are here - behind with the times as usual. oh well..

maybe the file you downloaded was cached or when you were going to download the file did you let the save file to disk window sit there for a minute because win 98 will start downloading before you actually download it. so it will be very fast at the begining and then taper down to what it is supposed to be.

I'm kinda dumb about these things but are you trying to imply that if IE did not calculate the speed then this D/L "burst of speed" would continue? Just asking.

Well, the speed burst would not continue, or at least not for long, maybe 2 or 3 seconds tops. But it does happen sometimes. I am only in high school, but this summer my company was contracted out to do roadrunner installations for Time Warner as well as the traditional house calls. Many of us (the techs) have seen speed bursts in our installations, but really it depends where you are, because some areas of San Antonio have great speed, and others not so great. (the speed bursts in the not so great are proportional to their "great" counterparts)
