Being online is fraught with dangers: Internet worms, spyware agents, Trojan horses, hijackers and more can wreak havoc, causing anything from slow performance to system crashes to full-blown identity theft. And to provide you with the kind of protection you need in these days of cyberthieves and online extortionists, your firewall must be able to monitor all inbound and outbound traffic and protect you from any unauthorized intrusion by rendering your PC invisible to anything that you haven’t authorized to see it

Outpost Firewall PRO Benefits
NEW! Protection from spyware and identity theft
New anti-spyware capabilities built into the program protect your computer against the rapidly increasing threats from spyware and ID theft. Spyware cannot enter, activate on, or transmit information out of computers protected by Outpost 3.5. The ID Block feature lets you determine which specific items of personal information, for example bank account numbers, are blocked from ever leaving the computer.

Know what's happening on your PC at all times
Outpost’s Network Activity Monitor watches every connection between your computer and the Internet, alerting you immediately to any communications that may be unauthorized so you can take appropriate action.

Automatic, intelligent protection against hacker attacks
Outpost’s Attack Detection automatically blocks network probes, zombie attacks, and other remote attempts to access your PC, using its continually-updated intrusion definitions database.

Control how applications communicate
Outpost’s Component Control, Hidden Process Control, and Open Memory Control let you decide what applications and processes on your PC are allowed to do and what - if any- outbound connections they may make. Spyware can’t phone home from an Outpost-protected PC.

Understand the threats
Every time Outpost 3.51 asks you for information regarding action to be taken, the new Smart Advisor helps you to choose the best course of action by displaying context-sensitive hints and live advice. So you’ll never need to wonder whether you’ve made the right security decision, and you’ll learn something new about firewall security every time.

A Guide to Producing a Secure Configuration for Outpost
The following suggestions are intended to help provide a more secure configuration for those running Outpost with the emphasis on restricting outgoing traffic. With the increasing amount of software attempting to "phone home" without user consent, and the increase in the number of trojans and viruses seeking to disguise their activity as legitimate Internet traffic, having a restrictive policy on what is allowed out is now every bit as important as limiting what is allowed in.

Product Update: Outpost Firewall Pro 3.5

We’ve got exciting news for you: the latest and greatest version of Outpost Firewall Pro will ship next week!

As we reported in our December newsletter, the new version will deliver higher protection levels thanks to closer integration of the anti-spyware plug-in with the firewall engine, plus the brand-new ImproveNet which will help to automate application protection, eliminating many of dialog windows you currently see when applications try to access the Internet.

ImproveNet is a network community that brings Outpost users and Agnitum engineers together to share configurations and enable everyone to benefit from universally-applicable Internet access security rules. By participating in the ImproveNet service, users can adjust their application access rules to protect against the latest threats. These settings are created, transferred and applied automatically, so that users no longer need to worry about how to respond to the next action prompt window – because ImproveNet adjustments mean that the window won’t appear in the first place!

Participation in the ImproveNet community is optional - you can turn it off with a single mouse click if for any reason you don’t want to get involved. However, we encourage you to try out ImproveNet and see for yourself how much more efficient (and silent!) your firewall will be.

Outpost Firewall Pro 3.5 will be released during the first week of February 2006. All users with a current maintenance subscription will receive the upgrade automatically at no charge as part of the normal update process. If your maintenance subscription has expires, please go to http://www.agnitum.com/purchase/purchase_renewal.php to renew your subscription.

Product Update: Outpost Network Security 2.0 (formerly Outpost Office Firewall)

You may recall that we introduced our first business-level product, Outpost Office Firewall, last spring. It seems that businesses liked the product enough to tell us how we should improve it to make it even more useful for company network protection. So, we have been working assiduously to develop a true network security product, and it is now almost ready. Within a month or so, we will release Outpost Network Security 2.0, the newly-expanded and strengthened next generation of Outpost Office Firewall.

Outpost Network Security 2.0 includes the proactive anti-spyware defenses and information theft protection introduced in Outpost Firewall Pro 3.0 in September last year, as well as significantly improved central administration controls. The core client firewall has also been reinforced and rendered more flexible to better defend network endpoints against intrusion.

Here are more details of the benefits to be found in the new Outpost Network Security 2.0:

Network anti-spyware
By adding a powerful anti-spyware module that combines proactive monitoring and an on-demand scanner, Outpost now reliably protects client PCs against spyware. Any spyware that gets onto a client – such as a salesperson’s laptop – is effectively contained. It is prevented from phoning home confidential corporate data when the laptop is reconnected to the network and from hopping across network connections to infect other clients. No spyware also minimizes the number of popup ads and other temptations faced by users when they’re on the web, so you’ll also benefit from improved productivity. Proactive spyware monitoring protects the integrity of corporate assets and reduces helpdesk calls, making a positive contribution to the bottom line.

Targeted information protection
Another benefit of Outpost Network Security 2.0 is targeted information protection. Simply identify blocks of text or character strings (such as passwords, confidential financial information, or employee identification information) and that data is prevented from ever leaving the network.

Group policies to manage desktops
The addition of group policy support gives administrators extra flexibility in managing their endpoints by assigning specific configurations to selected user groups. This enables IT to designate customized network access policies for specific groups depending on risk and exposure levels – for example, sales laptops will likely require stricter protection than accounting’s desktops.

An even tougher firewall
Incorporating the award-winning Outpost Firewall Pro 3.5 engine, Outpost Network Security delivers high performance yet easy-to-use protection against known and unknown network attacks.

The release of Outpost Network Security is scheduled for the beginning of March. Registered users of Outpost Office Firewall will be able to upgrade to Outpost Network Security free of charge as part of their current maintenance subscription.

Change Log

Following is a list of new features:

Application rules autocreation allows for automatic creation of rules for well-known applications as soon as they require network access for the first time. This significantly reduces the number of dialog pop-ups that require user responses;
Agnitum invites you to join the ImproveNet program to improve the quality, security and control features of Outpost Firewall Pro even more! With your consent, Outpost Firewall Pro will collect anonymous information about network-enabled applications on your computer to be used to expand the existing database of known applications so we can make many more automatic access rules available to users;
Outpost Firewall Pro 3.5 now also features an automatic distribution and update of new rules. After a new access rule has been created based on information from Agnitum's ImproveNet program, it is automatically shared with other Outpost Firewall Pro users via Agnitum Update to reduce the number of product prompts;
Anti-Spyware protection is even more tightly integrated with Outpost Firewall Pro's firewall, providing on-the-fly scanning of all processes that require network access for the first time;
Improved logging system now uses fewer system resources and provides clearer logs. Outpost Firewall Pro now has the capability of logging specific application activities by defining log exclusions for a particular Internet or network activity. The logging system includes optimized default settings with disabled logging for specific allowing rules.

The following issues are fixed (only significant ones are listed):

Outpost Firewall could crash after plug-ins diagnostics;
Outpost Firewall system tray icon might not appear after loading;
Packets could be missed after shutting the system down;
Outpost Firewall could hang after on sending minidump file.

Product update: Beta testing of Outpost Firewall Pro 4.0
New features: Self-protection feature in Outpost Firewall Pro 4.0

Product update: Beta testing of Outpost Firewall Pro 4.0
This month was devoted to the beta testing of Outpost 4.0. We asked our beta testers to give us their opinions so far, and it seems everyone agrees that the latest version of Outpost delivers a high level of protection. Even in its beta version, Outpost is reported to be very stable, with only minor bugs that can easily be fixed before the final release.

Here are some of the comments we received:
On the anti-leak features

The anti-leak functionality is at the core of the new Outpost 4.0 release. It provides proactive defense against all known existing techniques for stealing information from a user’s PC via unauthorized channels.

“Very safe, passes all firewall tests that are available (as far as I know)…”
“... it seems to be a safer product…”
“Huge improvement with the anti-leak component, which (finally) allows finer control of permissions/restrictions per process…”
“Passes 100% leak tests…”

On the entertainment mode
When you’re playing games or watching a movie online, you don’t want to be interrupted by requests from your firewall to make a decision about allowing or rejecting a particular connection. So Outpost Firewall Pro 4.0 offers an “entertainment mode” that suppresses firewall pop-up messages when specific programs (the list is customizable) are running. Switching to entertainment mode does not affect the security level of the firewall. The entertainment mode was met with applause—which only goes to show that even beta testers play games

“…Great addition…”
“…a must-have for gamers…”

On the support for 64-bit operating systems

Outpost Firewall Pro 4.0 lets all users of 64-bit operating systems experience the full advantages of the firewall’s proactive defenses.

“like the x64 support…”
“I really like the x64 move Agnitum has made…”

The final release of Outpost Firewall Pro 4.0 is scheduled for late July 2006 and will deliver the highest level in firewall defense available today. Check back at our website at www.agnitum.com for the latest updates.

New features: Outpost Firewall Pro 4.0 protects itself

Let’s take a brief look at malware evolution. In the early days of viruses and other malicious applications, most malware programs were written by people who simply wanted to show off their programming skills rather than cause actual damage to people’s lives and businesses. Then came the era of spyware and keyloggers, when malware began to steal data on command, which necessitated different defense techniques. As anti-malware tools have grown stronger, hackers now try to switch them off using rootkits and other advanced tools before proceeding with their own unauthorized actions. That’s the point at which it became necessary for security software to protect itself.

Firewalls protect inbound and outbound traffic. But who protects the firewall?

In response to this challenging question, Outpost Firewall Pro 4.0 features a new self-protection mode. With self-protection turned on, Outpost protects itself against termination caused by viruses, Trojans or spyware. Even attempts to simulate user keystrokes that would otherwise lead to firewall shutdown are detected and blocked. Outpost also constantly monitors its own components on the hard drive, registry entries, memory status, running services, and so on, and disallows any changes by malicious applications. This self-protection enables Outpost to erect a so-called “defense shield” around itself and all of its components.

This self-protection mode can be turned off, but only manually, and only by the authorized user. This disabling is required for the installation of plug-ins and other advanced functions, but should be re-enabled as soon as the changes have been made.
