View Full Version : Are my ADSL speeds up to par?
About 2 weeks ago I subscribed to Bellsouth DSL. It is a 3com modem that they provided and is internal. The speeds they give are 1.5mb/s down and 256k/s up. I have been getting quite confused over the bits/bytes. My download speeds usually peak in the mid-upper 300kb/s and usually average 160-180 kb/s from a good server. Is that k/bits or bytes?Is that an ok speed? Sorry I am so clueless but im new to this all. :)

are the speeds that you posted here from a download window or from a speed test???
Speeds are quoted in bits. Thus, that's 1.5mbps (megaBITS/sec) down, and 256kbps (kiloBITS/sec) up.
1.5mbps = ~185KBps (kiloBYTES/sec)
256kbps = ~30KBps (kiloBYTES/sec)
Please note that due to transmission overhead, you will only see about 80-90% of your rated package.
The speeds were in a download window. I guess the download window is bytes so i guess im doing alright. Thanks
