Hi all,
I just got a new computer with Windows XP Home. My old one was running Windows 98 SE. I have come across a few problems so far, and could use some help.
1. In Outlook Express, even though I have "Remember Password" checked and fill it in, each time I start OE and it tries to check my email, it asks for my Password.
2. How can I turn off the Service Pack 2 Security Center? It keep turing on the firewall even though I would rather load and use Zone Alarm.
3. I share files with other computers on my home LAN. But it won't let other computer attach to C:\Program Files and it's sub-folders, nor C:\Windows and it's sub-folders. Is there any way I can configure this so this works. For example, we copy our Quicken Data files from one computer to another, which are in C:\Program Files\Quicken.
Thanks for any help,
John

With the OE error. After you open it and it pops up asking for your password is it able to get your mail once you put in the password?
Windows home version uses simple file sharing. WIN XP PRO has the ability to disable Simple File sharing. XP home will not allow you to share WINDOWS or PROGRAM FILES directory
You need to move the required directories to the Root of C: like
C:\quickbooks
When you are Installing your quickbooks or whatever program you would like to share...always change the Default installation directory . So , if it says install to
C:\program files\hackamaka change it to c:\hackamaka
on the workstation that you would like to get data from the "file server"
you would then just go to F:\hackamacka\data

Pieman, yes I am able to get my email. And if I haven't exited from OE, I can click Send/Receive and it just authenticates. But each time I open OE, I have to enter my password, even though the Remember Password box is checked.
Also, I have another question. Is there an easy way to add NETBUI to XP Home? I used to use NETBUI to bind to my File & Print Sharing, but since I did not see that as available, I have had to use IPX/SPX instead, and it seems slower. Of course, I DO NOT bind File & Print Sharing to IP to increase security.

Does your server require Secure Password Authenication? If not do you have it checked off that it does?
The following Microsoft Article explains how to install the NETBEUI manually but as they say its Unsupported.

As far as I know, it does not. It is Bellsouth DSL. And I have that box unchecked.

This was the only article I could find on this subject:

What I would probably do is delete all the accounts that are in the Accounts page and recreate them. Start from scratch. Remove all those other services as well like Bigfoot and the rest and add your account starting from the beginning. Its possible that maybe it got corrupted. Make sure you have the proper pop3 and smtp addresses and username and password.
I hope this helps you. Im sorry I wasn't much of a help in this case.

Hey All, Thanks.
I got NETBEUI added and it's running and also got my OE problem resolved.
Another question, how can I configure Windows Media Player 10 so I can open more than one video or audio file at a time, (separate WMP window for each)? I looked through all the options in WMP and don't see one that seems to do this.
I'm also having a problem with my one Windows ME Laptop. I configred it back to Netbeui and tried to bind Client for MS & File/Print Share to just Netbeui and not TCP/IP. But it keeps deleting these 2 services. I even tried leaving them bound to my Dial-Up occurence of TCP/IP, but they still disappeared. Anyone have any solution for this?
THANKS!!!
