View Full Version : Best ethernet card for dsl?
In a previous thread i spoke about getting bellsouth adsl with an ethernet based external modem. Im a total newbie so i dont know which ethernet card i need(bellsouth doesnt provide them). Ive heard 3 com and intel are the best, but i have no idea which one i need. Some are 50 bucks, some are like 1000 dollars!!! Anyways, this card is for 1 dsl connection to ONE computer, but i dont want a crap card thats speed is going to suffer bc i play a lot of online games and if the speed sucks theres no point in having the dsl. Anyways give me a model number or whatever from these 2 card makers and tell me how much they cost :) Hope this isnt asking too much
I've had good luck with 3com and Linksys cards use 3com 905's in my main machine, have 5 more going through that machine on a DSL account, thats five machines gaming and downloading napster, the 3com never misses a beat, you can go to 3coms web site www.3com.com (http://www.3com.com) and see there whole product list, i'm looking into the
Model Number: 3CR990-TX-97
List Price: $ 120.00
has a built in 3XP processor to take some of the tcp/ip load off your processor
but as i'm in canda you can multiply that price by 1.5
the
Model Number: 3C905B-TX-NM
List Price: $ 97.00 are a great card, using one now
56k stay with 3com or Intel - Linksy is good also (good price)
Duzmor :D :D
One other question, does the cable i need come with the nic in the box or do i have to go buy some special cable? Also with that model that u mentioned that was 97.00, do i just plug it into my dsl modem or what? Please understand i dont want to network any other comps to this connection. ONLY one computer will have dsl. Sorry for being such a newbie, but is this stuff bsouth compatible?

You should get a cable with the DSL modem and as far as compatibility in your situation, a NIC is a NIC is a NIC, performance, reliability, configurability and warranty are the only real differences. Go with the 3Com for all of the above
