Hey guys,

Was over my friend's house the other night with three computers [one being mine] networked together. People would not be able to see me through the workgroups what so ever. Whenever they would try connecting to my computer, \\DAN, they would get the following error:

This error would occur both on the same workgroup, and in seperate work groups. I could connect to them with absolutely no problem at all. I was working with cpugenius, and we were troubleshooting the issue but have not come to a conclusion as to what this would be caused by. Some seem to think that it's caused by SP2 being installed on my computer, where as the other two only had SP1 [all running XP Pro]. I've been looking around and having seen too many resolutions. Has anyone encountered this before, and if so have you found a fix for it? My computer specs are in my signature.

Thanks,
Punkrulz

do you have file and printer sharing enabled?

Look for the simple things first. File print sharing, firewalls (doesn't XP SP2 have a new firewall? Search for a way to turn it off) Norton IS is also packaged on a few new computers (this stopped a friend recently from browsing his wireless network).

Remember that connecting to a network and sharing files are two different things. They require different services to be running and also require access/perms to said services.

Disable everything that might be disallowing the connection and go from there.

XP SP2 enables the Windows firewall by default now
Did you have your share setup through simple file sharing?
Workgroups is irrelevant, it's more just a visual aid to organize larger networks in network neighborhood/places....but computers in one workgroup can access computers in any other workgroup.
