I asked last week and no one replied. I have cable (RR) it's ok. Downloads are average. Slow w/ out tweaks, lots of memory, fast processor, and download accelerator.

It's not very constant. It changes a lot. I was wondering if DSL is always 1.5mbps like Bell South says?

Please reply today. I have to cancel cable now or be in big shiat. So I can sign up for DSL ...thanks in advance.

Hi you have asked the question of the year the cable/dsl wars question. First, you may have better speeds on cable where you are moving to. I like cable, but some like dsl, only one way to find out which one you like best. :)

Paki, due to transmission overhead, a 1.5mbps connection will yield about 1.3 max. As for cable vs. DSL, it all depends on your provider/area, so do some investigating to find out which service is best for you and your area. A good place to start is dslreports.com.

Seeing as it is your money not mine my suggestion would be the most logical and yeild the best results. Get both.

glc1 is right about the overhead, I do max out at 1.3mbps-160k/s. I currently have both cable and adsl, so far my dsl is blowing away my cable. My adsl specs are 1.5/128k which I'm getting .87% of :) and my cable specs are 1mb/256k but I'm actually getting around 700k/140k this is with patch, but in all fairness my cable company said that they are having problems and it should be resolved soon. I just got cable a few days ago, it's first month free and no installation charges so I thought I would try it out. :)

Hey glc1, I thought earthlink dsl was 1.5/256k. I am really considering switching to earthlink dsl becuase 128k upload sucks. How did you get them to give you 384k?

It all depends on where you live. in my area, dsl tops out at like 90k/s where as my cable modem tops out at 250k/s... now for 7 bucks more, i went with the cable... seems like a wise choice to me. now as other people said. there cable sucks. and as i say, it all depends on area. as for now, cable is great for me.

GLC1, can i ask u a question? where do u live? and how far u live from the central DSL office?
i am also the earthlink via covad, my speed is below 500/60. i am 15000 ft from the central office.

15000 feet, you should be getting between 384-500 but your upload shouldn't be effected by distance, at least that's what I heard.

I forgot to add that I live about 60 feet from the C/O. :D

I have cable (RR), and speeds do vary. In my area, when things are good, they are GOOD. During good hours, I get near or at the t3 mark. I don't know if I'm capped, but doesn't seem like it. Anyways, it all depends on your area. In my area its good, in yours, it might be great, or it might be bad. Try it out if they have a 30 day free thing and see what works best.

fjt2000, are you using any tweaks?

Before you go with cable. ask them how many they have on a node.
Mine has a 500 cap on theirs and it's killing me!
The lower the better !

There are a lot of people on my node and I get great speeds. Could be there router is not big enough to Handle the amount of people useing it. We had this problem here for about a month till they setup newer routers in my area. Then every thing was back to normal. I have 650 on my node and get great speeds. Just try out there free time if the cable company has one there then decide for your self. I run roadrunner and my speeds stay the same sense they upgraded. Good luck!

What does SBC get for ADSL? Each BellCo has different plans. Verizon's $40/month only gets you 640kps. 1.5Mbps (IF you get that)
goes for $99/month. Both say only 90kps upload.
