I went over to help a buddy hook up his new RR svc. to his new PC the other night. Never had any problems doing this before- have hooked up about 10 of these for people- usually simple, fast, and always works....

until this time!

New Dell w/ME, and Linky will NOT hook to WAN. Will not pick up IP from Toshiba modem. Tried static IP for lan side, etc. Nothing. Release, renew, blah blah blah. Reset modem, Linky, you name it. Nothing. Hook PC back direct, instantly grabs IP from Toshiba, and we're all set.

Does anyone know if the Toshiba cable modem ties to MAC of the original PC configured? Do I need to use MAC spoofing to enable this w/Linky?

Unit shipped w/1.36 firmware. I brought it back home, flashed it to 1.37. I hooked it to my lan, (also RR- different node) and it works fine. I have Terayon modem.

Thoughts?

OK- I'll answer myself! Turned out to be NIC- 3com 905. Would hook to cable modem OK, but would not pass through Linky- I still don't get it. But, installed Intel Pro100 I had laying around, and it hooked up instantly. Oh well, go figure.

This was the original NIC supplied by Dell, ordered w/PC. Not embedded as w/Optiplex, but pci NIC. Don't know if this was a ME problem with NIC driver, or what. It would always see lan side, and pick up IP from Linky OK, but Linky would never pick up WAN.

Just something to remember.
